Upgrades planned for Cardiff Central station

Network Rail has announced plans for the biggest transformation to Cardiff Station since it was first built in the 1850s.

The Grade II listed building could be expanded to create a bigger, better and brighter structure as part of a major redevelopment of the station during its next five-year funding period, which starts in 2019.

Passenger numbers are projected to grow significantly in the next decade and beyond, meaning improvements are necessary to accommodate the rising demand.

The existing station could be integrated into a new, modern building that better reflects customer requirements.

Planned upgrades include a new concourse with better platform connectivity, more retail space and additional places to eat and drink, along with a new car park and transport facilities.

Mark Langman, route managing director for Network Rail in Wales, said: "The station area is a prime location for commercial development … and we are really excited by the site and the opportunities it will unlock to redevelop the station."
