Bombardier announces restructuring plan

Transport company Bombardier has announced a restructuring plan that could lead to job losses in the UK.

Some 1,800 positions are to be cut across the firm's global operations during the restructuring period, which will see its aerospace arm split into three segments focused on business aircraft, commercial aircraft and aerostructures/engineering services.

In addition, its customer services division is to be absorbed into the three aerospace business segments.

The cuts come on top of reductions announced by the firm in January, when it revealed 1,700 aerospace jobs would go.

Bombardier is one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland, with 6,000 people working across four sites.

"The new aerospace organisational structure will enable us to be more agile and flexible in addressing customer needs, while increasing our focus on growth areas," chief executive officer Pierre Beaudoin said in a statement.

Bombardier's new organisational structure will be in place from January 1st 2015.
