Walking and cycling 'better than driving to work'

Those who avoid driving to work enjoy better mental health, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Centre for Diet and Activity Research noted how those who stopped using their car to get to work and instead walked or cycled enjoyed better mental health.

Almost 18,000 individuals aged between 18 and 65 were examined over 18 years and it became apparent that those who used public transport instead of the car were also better off in regards to wellbeing.

Lead researcher from UEA's Norwich Medical School Adam Martin said that while many may expect public transport to cause stress on account of disruptions or failing to find a seat, this is not always the case. Instead, commuters can relax, read or socialise on their journey to work and because there's normally a walk to the station, it "appears to cheer people up".

He added that the longer individuals spent in cars on their way to work, the more detrimental effect it had on their wellbeing.
