Leeds bus lane cameras rake in £3m in fines

Bus lane cameras have seen motorists around Leeds charged almost three million pounds in fines over the past two years.

The cameras have been put in place to spot motorists who are illegally using bus lanes around the city.

One camera alone caught over 25,000 drivers in the bus lane in the two years up to April 2014. This device is situated on Boar Lane in Leeds city centre. The second most prolific camera, which caught out more than 10,000 drivers in its first year, is situated on Kirkstall Road bus lane.

According to Leeds City Council, the cameras are intended to cut congestion and drive up public transport usage. They added that the money from the fines has been ring-fenced to go into highways spending.

Automobile Association president Edmund King suggested that the high level of fines could be due to bad signage and planning.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post he noted: “Fines of three million pounds over two years suggest that something is going wrong as nobody wants to receive a fine.”
