UPS opens driver training facility in Burton-upon-Trent

01 June 2017/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain

UPS has opened a best-in-class UPS Integrad™ driver training facility in Burton-upon-Trent. Named after the bespoke UPS training method it will host, the facility is designed to up-skill about 1,000 drivers per year.

During its 110 year history, UPS has patented training methods for its drivers. The UPS Integrad training method was conceived in 2005 – following a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to study how young people learn in an increasingly digital world.

The facility in Burton-upon-Trent has been specifically designed to train UPS drivers on safe driving and service methods. The training encompasses a mixture of 3-D computer simulations, webcast learning modules, and traditional classroom instruction. The UPS Integrad facility will also offer “train-the-trainer” classes for driving supervisors.

The training is rooted in employee safety and encourages pride in the organisation, which has historically been a component to UPS employee retention and progression. UPS Integrad curriculum teaches the same methods used by UPS Circle of Honor members – an elite group of more than 9,000 active UPS drivers who have not experienced an avoidable accident for 25 years or more.

There are 60 operating facilities with a fleet of 2,200 vehicles in the UK business. UPS’s new sorting and distribution facility at the DP World London Gateway logistics park in southeast England will open later this year. The London Gateway, UPS’s largest infrastructure investment outside the US, will help meet the growing demand from its UK and European customers.

Luis Arriaga, ‎President UK, Ireland & Nordics at UPS said: “Our drivers’ skill and dedication sets us apart in the market, attracts new customers and allows our operations to run smoothly. We’ll continue to invest in the UK workforce to meet growing volume and customer demand.”
