Work begins on new bus station

30 April 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Bus & Coach, Transport Planning

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Bury Council have been working in partnership to develop an enhanced bus station in Radcliffe town centre, which aligns with the Radcliffe Town Centre Masterplan and the council’s regeneration aspirations for Radcliffe.

When completed, it will replace the current facility which currently stands on the opposite side of Dale Street.

The project will deliver increased levels of comfort and security plus high quality upgrades to the surrounding environment, including a high quality public realm, stepped seating areas, stair and ramp access, and high quality planting.

Under the new plans, passengers will also benefit from new purpose-built shelters, including CCTV.

Funding is being provided jointly by TfGM and Bury Council and the project is scheduled for completion in late 2015.

TfGM Head of Programme Management Services, Peter Boulton, said: 'It is really positive news that work has started on this project that, once complete, will provide a significantly upgraded facility and a high quality gateway to the town centre for bus passengers.

'Along with the existing Metrolink stop, the new station will ensure that there are excellent public transport links to jobs, retail, education and leisure in the Radcliffe area.'

Mike Owen, interim chief executive of Bury Council, said: 'This is the second phase of development proposals to regenerate Radcliffe town centre, following the £1 million refurbishment of the Market Hall. This will be followed by a third phase which will be a retail-led scheme, anchored by a supermarket, which we hope to start work on early in 2016.

'In 2011, when we announced our renewed determination to regenerate Radcliffe town centre, some people probably thought ‘we’ll believe it when we see it’. Well, the evidence is now there for everyone to see, and we’re sure the people of Radcliffe will be very pleased with the new bus station.'
