One of the largest logistics training schools in the country has opened its doors in Liverpool. The City of Liverpool College has launched the academy working with key partners including international training firm Transline Group. The academy will also work with key employers including Stobarts, Royal Mail and B&M.
The new academy will provide apprenticeships and professional qualifications and training which will help students get the skills they need to pursue a career in the industry or upskill those currently working in logistics.
The College’s existing logistics provision enjoyed excellent success rates and the School of Engineering and Logistics was graded as good during the College’s last inspection in April 2014. The school will form the foundation for the new academy.
Chief executive of the college Elaine Bowker said: “Logistics is a huge area of growth in the region as we move to become a Northern Powerhouse and develop Liverpool as a Superport. In the next few years we are going to see thousands of new jobs created in the sector, but currently the region doesn’t have the skilled workforce available to fill these jobs. The academy will play a vital role in providing the skills needed for the industry and it will also ensure that local people get the training they need to benefit from the jobs being created, rather than firms having to recruit from outside the region.”
Bernard Molloy, director of international logistics firm Unipart, which is playing a key role in Liverpool’s development as a Superport said: “Supply chain logistics are fundamental to the Superport and key to forming the ‘Northern Powerhouse’. We are looking at the creation of more than 25,000 jobs through the Superport scheme and logistics will be a major elements of this”.
Lara Watson, director of training organisation the Transline Group said: “Logistics and transport is a growing industry and can provide some really exciting career opportunities. We are working with the college to offer these opportunities to students and forming a vital pathway for people to get the skills they need to really forge a successful career in industry.”
