Luton airport receives recognition for energy saving policies

30 September 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Aviation

Luton airport has become one of only a few airports in the world to be recognised for its energy saving initiatives.

It has been accredited with the internationally recognised Energy Management Standard by the British Standards Institute (BSI).

Luton’s energy saving initiatives, such as the introduction of LED lighting and PIR motion sensors, have led to a reduction in carbon tonnage associated with electricity use by 342 tCO2 tonnes in the Carbon Trust’s last reporting year, BSI said.

The airport achieved this while also posting record passenger growth and refurbishing plans as part of a £100 million development project.

This is the third international standard that LLA has achieved in two years.

Luton airport senior manager for health, safety and environment Simon Bown, said; “The achievement of these three certifications has taken years of dedicated work and the accreditation for energy management puts LLA among only a handful of airport operators in the world.

“We’ll continue to work hard to reduce our environmental impact as the Airport continues to grow in terms of passengers and new routes,” he added.
