Measures set out by the Department for Transport (DfT) will see bus travel improve for the public and will give local councils more control to improve the travel service.

Roads minister Andrew Jones said that these changes would see improvements to services all over the UK, as reported on the government website.

Speaking at the UK Bus Summit he commented: "Passengers want to see Oyster-style ticketing, better information on fares before they travel and live updates about when their bus is going to arrive at their stop."

As companies will have to share information concerning routes, dates and timetables, the changes are set to see technological advancements in bus travel as it will allow programmers to develop apps for customers to plan journeys that are more reliable.

Councils and local authorities will also be given more power to build partnerships with bus companies, which should see an improvement in the timekeeping of bus services.
