“Too soon” to speculate Brexit effects, says BIFA

27 June 2016/Categories: Industry News

UK freighters should not let the outcome of the EU Referendum affect their day-to-day business.

That's the advice of the British International Freight Association (BIFA), following Britain's Brexit vote.

The process of Britain officially leaving the EU could take up to two years, and BIFA says it will campaign to ensure that the UK’s visible import and export trade does not become overburdened by complicated trade procedures.

Despite 51.9 per cent of voters backing Brexit at the polls, BIFA director general Robert Keen said that as things currently stand, the UK remains an EU member.

“It is too soon to start speculation on the outcome of two years of negotiations regarding trade deals and movement of goods,” he said.

BIFA will now assess how it can supports its members in light of new legislative changes expected between the date that the UK formally triggering the resignation process and when its exit becomes effective.

He added: “We will be making sure that those undertaking the negotiations recognise the fundamental role that our members’ freight forwarding services, including customs processing, play in underpinning the movement of the UK’s visible trade with Europe.”

The British International Freight Association (BIFA) is the trade association for UK-registered companies engaged in international movement of freight by all modes of transport, air, road, rail and sea, with around 1,500 corporate members.

The body maintained a neutral stance in the lead-up to the EU Referendum and hasn’t expressed an opinion on the outcome since.
