Government invests £30.3 million into greener buses

Up to 326 new low emission buses will join England’s public transport after the government shared more than £30 million amongst 13 bus operators.

The funding is intended to make England’s public transport system a little greener and cleaner by helping bus companies add electric, hybrid, hydrogen, and biomethane buses to their fleets.

Of the £30.38m dished out by the government, £7.6 million will go on installing the relevant infrastructure to help fuel the low emitting vehicles.

It’s great news for Liverpool and Merseyside, with Merseytravel receiving £4.7 million to bring in 72 eco-buses and a further £280,720 for infrastructure.

London was the biggest winner though, after Transport for London was awarded a cool £5 million to buy 34 electric buses and install the necessary recharging facilities to run them.

Elsewhere. Nottingham CIty Transport will spend £4.43 million on 53 biomethane buses while Birmingham City Council will acquire 42 hydrogen fuel cell buses for £2.8 million.

Transport minister Andrew Jones believes that “greener buses are good for passengers and good for British business”.

Announcing the investment, he said: “Low emission buses are cost efficient, good for the environment, and there are wider benefits. By supporting this technology, the government is ensuring the UK is driving innovation and investment up and down the country.”
