Scholarships and Awards
For all members of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) and CILT International.
The Henry Spurrier Scholarships
These scholarships are intended to encourage research by contributing to expenses incurred in travelling and subsistence, obtaining research material or mounting a research programme. The awards are not intended to be used for tuition fees but may be used to support the necessary research for the completion of a dissertation for a higher degree. It is expected that a copy of the research report/dissertation will be sent to the Institute to be placed in the Library.
- One major award of up to £2,500
- Three minor awards of up to £1,000 each
Support Grants
These are to help students with books and local costs.
- Ten grants of £200 each
Awards for Meritorious Papers
Four awards of £250 each will be made for meritorious papers in three categories:
- Policy - for example on issues of accessibility, sustainability, environment, economics and regulation and control
- Transportation management - freight and passenger transport across all modes and including both operations and infrastructure
- Industrial logistics - including supply chain management, inventory, procurement, etc and their underpinning technology
Acceptable papers will be no less than 2,500 words and will have been published or presented in a public arena.
Nominations must be made by CILT National Councils, Sections or Branches or CILT(UK) Regional or Faculty Committees only.
For members of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) only:
The John F Hooper Scholarship
- A scholarship of £1,000 awarded under the same conditions as the Henry Spurrier Scholarships
The John Gilbraith Award
- An award of £500 for a paper of merit on the subject of the multimodal movement of freight by road and rail. Other conditions as for the worldwide awards for meritorious papers

Application/nomination forms can be obtained from the address below, to which they must be returned to arrive no later than the closing date of 28 February each year.
Applications and nominations from countries where there is a local CILT office must be made to that office, which will forward them on.
Decisions on the allocation of the scholarships and awards will be published in May each year.
