Faculties & Policies

Aviation Forum

Chairman: Vernon Murphy FCILT

Your Institute is introducing some changes, making us more open and relevant to you, whichever sector of logistics or transport you work in.

We are replacing the four Faculties with eight Professional Sectors. These Professional Sectors will provide specialist activity for a particular area of interest whilst continuing to offer opportunity and involvement across the profession.

What you need to do...

We are now asking all members to update their details and tell us which Professional Sectors and Forums they want to belong to as soon as possible. You can do this in a number of ways - online through ‘My Membership', complete the Member Selection form that you will shortly receive in Focus, or complete the form included on the Current Awareness Bulletin over the next few weeks.

Please note, you can now belong to as many Professional Sectors and Forums as you wish.

Should you wish to make your selections online, please remember that you will need to create your password to login if you have not already done so. A short guide to making your selection online is available here.

Aviation Forum

The Aviation Forum comprises a group of professionals from the airline and airport sectors that reviews current and proposed policies for aviation and provides, where appropriate, expert advice to government.

The Committee meets four times a year and is active throughout the year in responding to consutlations and other events.  Early in 2008 we responded to the DfT consultation on Adding Capacity at Heathrow Airport and in January 2009 the Government announced its decisions about adding capacity at Heathrow as well as road and rail infrastructure.  In August 2008 we submitted a paper to the DfT’s call for evidence for its Review of the Regulatory Framework for UK Airports (click here for a link).  Sunsequently, in May 2009 we submitted a response to the DfT's consultation on this issue.  In October 2008 we responded to the Competition Commission's inquiry into BAA airports (click here for a link).  The Competition Commission issued their final report in March 2009 but BAA has submitted an appeal.

The Aviation Forum is active in conferences and seminars.  In October 2008, CILT(UK) endorsed a conference on high speed rail at Heathrow and in February 2009, we endorsed a Waterfront conference entitled 'The Aviation Debate - Can the Growth Continue' (click here for programme).  Members of the Committee also attend relevant cconferences, such as the Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport conference 'The Future of UK Airports' in May 2009.

The 2009 CILT Annual Aviation Lecture in memory of Sir Sefton Brancker took place in April 2009 and was by David Macmillan, Director General of Eurocontrol on 'Aviation and the Environment'.  A report on the lecture appeared in the July 2009 edition of Focus (click here for a link).  Articles by members of the Committee have also appeared in Focus as follows:

The Chairman of the Aviation Forum Committee, Vernon Murphy, appeared before the House of Common Transport Committee on 6 May 2009 and gave evidence about a number of issues which the Aviation Forum has been considering, including capacity, regulation and taxation.  The Committee's full report was published in December 2009 and is available in two volumes, Volume I (main report) and Volume II (evidence).
