Sponsored by Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS)
For significant achievement in any aspect of the education, training and development of people which is relevant to logistics and/or transport.
WINNER: Boots UK Supply Chain
Reducing staff by 80% in a Distribution Centre network will provide any company with daunting challenges both to their social responsibility and to retaining service to stores. Risks include low morale and high absenteeism leading to falling productivity.
Boots set out to mitigate these by developing plans to equip as many people as possible with the skills to deploy internally or gain suitable employment elsewhere.
Partnerships with companies and the commitment of senior managers has seen employee turnover remain stable, learning targets surpassed and service to stores improve. In certain locations up to 90% of staff are engaged in some form of learning.
FINALIST: Argos Home Delivery UK and DHL Supply Chain
The key to a successful training programme is signified by the results it generates. Reducing delivery failures by 34% and customer complaints by over 50% is a good barometer of its success. Savings equated to £400,000 in a single year.
Focussing the training and development of staff on key issues such as delivering excellent customer service has seen a marked improvement in the actual service and also in the attitude and engagement of the staff.
Staff self-confidence is increased as they are made aware of the strategy and become more accountable for their actions. It is team building at its best.
FINALIST: Gist Ltd
The introduction of local People Panels has enabled GIST to closely evaluate each location's status with regard to staff retention, succession planning and individual development plans. The panel is able to review performance and instigate training and development plans for employees.
Allied to this GIST has formed its own training company to not only develop its own staff but also those from other companies and now provides over 20 accredited courses at various NVQ levels.
This commitment ensures the continued success of the company in terms of increased productivity, improved safety performance, succession planning and staff and customer retention.
