What is your professional experience? In my last role two roles I was European Supply Chain manager for major multinational companies. I have a big automotive, chemical, packaging manufacturing logistics background. I won the ILT award for the use of inventory and production control for Treves UK in Harrogate in 1999 an automotive supplier.
Who are the other key personnel in the organisation and their professional experience? We have a very strong marketing department headed up by Angela Betts, with a background in telemarketing/marketing. Our Distance Learning Manager is Vicky Glister, with a manufacturing industry background. Our Financial Manager is Joanna Jackson, with a college finance and admin background. Our Training Manager is Terry Morgan, who has 22 years in army logistics.
How important to you feel professional qualifications are in the logistics and transport sector? Qualifications are important to show people that career progression routes are available and this in turn can attract the numbers and calibre of people that industry needs.
What future developments are planned within the organisation in relation to logistics and transport qualifications? Durham Logistics College is part of a partnership bid for the North East for a Centre of Excellence. We are building strong relationships with both the HE and FE sectors and are running Level 2 and 3 programmes classroom taught out of Gateshead and Middlesbrough Colleges, and Level 4 and 5 programmes running out of a central location for the region of Durham City, with venues including Durham University.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering entering the logistics and transport profession? It is a very challenging sector, requiring a wide and diverse range of skills. This will mean that you are constantly challenged in a fluid situation. With the correct guidance from management, combined with training and education, you have every opportunity of career progression.
