Including:
- Reduction in emissions, including disposal methods
- Improved sustainability of products or operations
- Reduction in packaging or other waste (including recycling)
- Staff involvement in improvement programmes
And the winner is:
- Gerber Juice Company Ltd

Winner - Gerber Juice Company Limited
Gerber have come up with a solution to the issue of waste from fruit juice manufacture, whereby fruit and vegetable waste from juice manufacture is recycled via anaerobic digestion generating electric power and an organic fertiliser. An environmental partnership has been created with economic and social benefits for the local community - the process captures a potentially harmful waste stream and converts it to electricity and a soil improver for which there is a local demand. Future developments could more than double the potential for power generation at a modest cost. The scheme is also in line with UK energy policy to capture the energy potential of waste.
Finalists:
- N Brown Group Plc
The judges like the approach taken by this home shopping fulfilment business in order to reduce environmental impact. The approach was holistic and thoroughly pragmatic. At the same time the organisation has taken existing good ideas and rolled them out further across all areas of the business. Success across all these areas was proven and their approach can be recommended to many other companies in the sector. - FirstGroup plc
FirstGroup have installed the eco-driving technology across their entire UK fleet of 8,500 buses. This entry already shows evidence of being highly effective. The approach has included driver training and encouragement to accompany the technology. The approach has yielded proven success and addressed a major element of cost for the Company. This approach is widely applicable across the bus and coach industry and can be commended to other similar operators. It is noticeable that we had three entries this year using this technology, which appears to have reached a level of maturity.
