Foundation Degrees

Introduction to Foundation Degrees

Launched in 2001, Foundation Degrees are a new type of degree, the first new higher education qualification to be introduced in England in 25 Years. Foundation degrees are developed and delivered by colleges, universities and employers. These groups have worked together to create a blend of academic and work-based learning that suits both students and employers.  

Employment-related higher education qualifications, they are recognised at Level 5 in the QCA National Qualifications Framework - just below Honours degree level (at Level 6).

Foundation Degrees are relevant to business because they are designed and delivered in partnership with employers. Students will normally be working and studying at the same time. As key elements of the courses will have been designed, or suggested by business people who know what they need in the workplace, employers will know people with Foundation Degrees have the skills they need to improve their business performance and profitability.
