Robin Middleton is the first holder of that title and he had a challenging introduction to this role by co-ordinating the responses of various bodies to the damage of the container ship MSC NAPOLI due to heavy weather in the Channel. The outcome was the successful salvage of the ship and most of its cargo and encouragingly limited environmental damage. Hear how this was achieved in this important presentation to us.

DECEMBERWednesday, 5th December 2007Annual Charity QuizVenue: Staff Common Room, Wallisdown Campus, University of Bournemouth, Wallisdown Road, Poole BH12 5BB The annual pre-Christmas quiz night is always a popular feature of the Hampshire & Dorset Group calendar of events. Teams (often formed on the night) compete for a trophy and for various prizes by answering an eclectic mix of questions on transport, general knowledge and current affairs. For several years recently we have had winning teams that were only formed on the night so it’s a very open competition in a very convivial atmosphere. This year we will be also inviting CILT members from other Groups in our Region to join us. So, will the cup pass out of Hampshire & Dorset hands? Come along and find out or, better still, get your own team formed now and start training!
Please book individually, or as teams of four via Corby in order to establish numbers attending. There will be a charge of £5 per person collected on the night. This represents the entry fee to the quiz and a buffet. The surplus proceeds from this event are always donated to a relevant charity.

The economics and the logistics of airline baggage handling Richard Hunt FCILT International President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Many a traveller’s tale surrounds a story of lost or mislaid luggage but the reality is that a very complex logistics operation ensures that such tales remain a relatively rare experience. Of course, these complex logistics are expensive and the cost must be added to the final price of the ticket. This means that the new low-cost airlines must make their luggage charges much more visible in order for them to stay profitable. Our presenter takes us on an expert’s guided tour of this generally overlooked aspect of today’s busy air transport logistics.
