Master Planning
When:
9 September 2008 - 11 September 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Top level planning is essential for companies who aim to satisfy customers and make profits. The translation of company strategy into business plans and practical plans and schedules requires good Master Planning. This is one of the more difficult tasks for a management team to accomplish consistently and successfully. It requires good, accurate information, sound judgement, and the avoidance of inter-departmental politics. It must resolve the natural conflict that exists in the various objectives of the departments involved.
Master Planning encompasses a number of activities: Demand Management, Business Planning, Sales and Operations Planning, Resource Planning, Master Production Scheduling, Rough Cut Capacity Planning, and Final Assembly Scheduling. The planning of financial numbers, product volumes and product mix is considered. It is essential that the plans that are developed are achievable by the available resources. The end result of Master Planning is the best MPS, that will meet the demand from the marketplace on time, in full, that delivers the higher level plans, and is realistically achievable.
The course will help the participants to develop, or be more aware of the processes to create, Sales & Operations Plans, Resource Plans, Master Schedules, and the Final Assembly Schedule, using the demand coming in from the marketplace. The content will enable those involved to become more effective, and will provide management with an insight into how they should fit into the total company processes
Topics covered on this course will include:
- Demand management - forecasting, order servicing, other demand
- Source data for forecasting
- Forecasting techniques
- Order entry and customer service
- Business planning
- Sales & Operations Planning - concepts and implementation
- Resource Planning - long term capacity planning
- Concepts of Master Production Scheduling
- Developing and managing the MPS
- Rough Cut Capacity Planning - medium term capacity planning
- Final Assembly Scheduling
- Linkages with other manufacturing and business functions
- Management implications of Master Planning

Material & Capacity Requirements Planning
When:
16 September 2008 - 18 September 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is a highly effective way of planning the material requirements, at all levels of the Bills of Material (BOM) to meet the Master Production Schedule (MPS) and thus the demand in the marketplace and the higher level plans of the organisation.
MRP suggests additional purchase requisitions and planned manufacturing orders that are needed for the supply to meet the demand. It also checks the timing of the existing supply to meet the demand on time, and when necessary generates action messages to prompt buyers and planners to adjust the current plan. It leaves the fine-tuning to the people involved. Successful MRP requires the right, achievable MPS and accurate data on inventory open orders, planning parameters, bills of material and perhaps routings. The material plan must be matched against the available capacity in Capacity Requirements Planning (CRP) and, where there is imbalance; solutions must be found by adjusting capacity and/or load, as appropriate. MRP and CRP together provide the detailed planning of materials and capacity within an integrated business system. The effective and considered implementation of both can dramatically improve customer service, whilst simultaneously reducing stock levels, and helping to improve manufacturing productivity through better planning. An understanding of the techniques and how to apply them, is a prerequisite of achieving these benefits.
Topics covered on the course will include:
- Concepts and Principles of MRP/CRP
- Inputs to MRP/CRP
- The logic of MRP/CRP, the MRP explosion process, load and capacity, finite and infinite loading
- Outputs from MRP/CRP Refinements to MRP/CRP MRP/CRP in various environments
- Working with MRP/CRP, dealing with bottlenecks
- Conclusions, MRP/CRP interfaces
The course is aimed at anyone involved in the planning process, including material planners, buyers and capacity planners. This course is also scheduled to run on 16th - 18th September 2008

Supply Chain Network
Subject TBA
When:
22 September 2008, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
This group has been running for nearly four years. It was set up as a networking and learning opportunity for younger people working within the supply chain in retailers, manufacturers and logistics providers - we use the word 'young' loosely, ages ranging from 20s-50s - a beating pulse is the important factor!
The group numbers about 50 people, with 20 typically at any one meeting. We meet about every six weeks or so in a pub in central London. Networking normally starts from 6pm onwards with snacks at 6.30pm and the 'formal' presentation from 7pm, with more networking afterwards. We aim to have a mix of 'experts' and presentations from within the group. The environment is very informal with everyone on barstools and no audio-visual equipment. The objective is discussion rather than a formal presenter at the front, with presenters encouraged to bring issues as well as experience.
We are always looking for new members, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with Kirsten Tisdale - just put 'Supply Chain Network' in the comments box on the contact form that this link takes you to, as well as completing your contact details.

30 September 2008 - 1 October 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
This two-day course considers the lean business principles developed and pursued by Toyota, developing an understanding of the fundamentals affecting product flow.
Many companies implement lean tools and techniques in their manufacturing areas without the rest of the business understanding the implications to support them. This course is designed to develop an understanding of what a business should commit to if it is to implement lean manufacturing in a long-term sustainable way.
Topics covered on this course will include:
- The long-term business philosophy
- Getting the right results by using the right processes - flow, kanban, level workload, right-first-time quality, standard operations, visual control
- People issues - leaders, individuals, teams, partner organisations
- The learning organisation - continuous improvement, decision taking, gemba
At the end of the course, delegates will understand the business principles needed to support lean manufacturing if real business benefits are to be gained and sustained. They will appreciate the inter-relationships of these principles and will understand the fundamentals of product flow. Delegates will also understand that applying lean tools and techniques in isolation may bring some (possibly temporary) benefit, but will fall far short of the possible business advantages.
The course is appropriate for all senior managers in organisations that are or contemplating implementing lean manufacturing and managers from functional areas in those organisations. It is also relevant for others who want to gain an understanding of the total business approach to lean manufacturing.

Supply Chain Council European Conference 2008
Un-Locking Supply Chain Value Through SCOR
When:
30 September 2008 - 2 October 2008
Where: Budapest
Attend the Supply Chain Council European Conference 2008 and learn how some of the world's leading businesses developed and implemented innovative supply chain strategies - some with the help of the Supply-Chain Operations Reference model (SCOR®)- that have enabled them to substantially out-execute their competitors and achieve strong financial results year over year.
Companies today must build highly integrated supply chains that can quickly support new market opportunities and be synchronised and streamlined to maximise efficiency and effectiveness. The 2008 Supply-Chain Council European Conference will offer three tracks of concurrent presentations by companies that have unlocked supply chain value:
- Embracing Risk & Taking it to the Bottom Line: Identifying, measuring, managing and mitigating supply chain risk
- Performance Management in a Turbulent World: Understanding performance and benchmarking against the competition
- Rethinking Globalization - Is the Race Still On?: A look at macro-factors impacting the decision to globalize or making globalization more difficult
A key tool common to many of these companies is the SCOR® process reference model. Hundreds of organisations are using the SCOR methodology, diagnostic and benchmarking tool to unlock supply chain value. Case studies will be presented by companies that have successfully used SCOR to enhance their supply chain. Learn and exchange with practitioners who face the same challenges as you...plan to actively take part in a conference organised by European supply chain professionals for European supply chain professionals!
Attendees include forward-looking business leaders and managers, such as C-level executives, presidents, vice presidents, and supply chain specialists, as well as representatives from academia, analyst organizations, and government.
The Supply-Chain Council European Conference is sponsored by the Supply-Chain Council, an independent member-supported consortium dedicated to improving supply chain management practices within and between interested parties across the extended supply chain.

Business Process Outsourcing
When:
14 October 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Outsourcing business processes has become an innovative response for survival in today’s increasingly competitive markets. In many instances, however, organisations are adopting this relatively high-risk solution without any previous knowledge on the subject of outsourcing. This one day course on business process outsourcing (BPO) provides delegates with a critical evaluation of the opportunities, challenges, risks, and rewards associated with this increasingly used approach to organisational design and operation.
The framework of the session is based on the key stages required to manage the BPO life cycle. Delegates will consider the key themes related to an outsourcing project from developing a business case for outsourcing right through to its subsequent ongoing management and measurement.
Session Outcomes
By the end of the session delegates will be able to:
- Understand how BPO can contribute towards competitive advantage
- Develop a BPO business case
- Identify & select a BPO partner
- Develop the BPO contract
- Manage the BPO transition
- Manage the buyer-vendor relationship
Why should you attend?
BPO can be a serious consideration for any business process within any sized company. The outcomes from this session will be useful to managers within organisations to determine their best opportunities for outsourcing business operations. This session will provide participants with knowledge and techniques to make informed decisions and choices. This course is also scheduled to run on 14th October 2008

Value Stream Mapping
When:
15 October 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Value Stream Mapping has become an accepted first step to making effective changes towards Lean Manufacturing. Too often a "paintball" approach has been adopted whereby various techniques are thrown at a problem situation. Although you may eventually cover the wall you waste a lot of paint.
Value Stream Mapping helps identify and coordinate the most appropriate steps, leading to a short term and a medium term clarification of where the operation is going and how to get there.
This is the purpose of this short course. Participants will be shown how to draw current and future state maps, to identify and prioritise problems, and to develop the steps necessary to move to the future state. The course includes video and simulation material and is based on real cases from various sectors.
Topics covered in this course will include:
- The context of value stream mapping: lean thinking
- Internal value stream mapping – current state mapping
- Mapping and implementation
- Internal value stream mapping – developing the future state • Heijunka scheduling and the future state
- Related mapping tools
- Organising for lean transformation – pre-during- and post-mapping workshops and events
- Supply chain value stream mapping – introduction and cases
This course is aimed at middle to senior managers from all organisational functions, but especially those people working in materials management, kaizen and lean. With the help of hands on exercises, videos, practical games and "discuss your own problem" sessions, participants should leave the course with a confidence in how to value stream map and how to lead a mapping workshop. Delegates will gain significant knowledge in how to visualise and develop "future state" maps as a vital part in planning lean implementation. They will also be aware of many of the pitfalls of practical value stream mapping.

Supply Chain Network
Subject TBA
When:
20 October 2008, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London

Strategy & Tactics for Today's Supply Chain
When:
4 November 2008 - 6 November 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Most of us “plan” in one way or another…. However, most planning is to a rigid and set formula, which takes little account of fast moving market conditions. Some plans can be out of date before the ink is dry!
This three-day course looks at a new and innovative approach to the planning process and deals with both strategy and tactics in a typical dynamic situation by putting YOU in the planning hot seat!!
The first day will introduce the concepts of the new planning approach and set in place a flexible planning framework for you to use. Days two and three put those concepts to the test in an interactive workshop where the framework will be used to deal with planning in a rapidly changing “case study“ scenario.
Session Outcomes
By the end of the session delegates will be able to:
- Define ‘strategy’ and “tactics”
- Consider how strategy develops through changing market forces
- Develop a new, flexible strategy model
- Cope with the ” winds of change” and the external environment
- Devise practical strategy and tactics for a rapidly changing environment
Why should you attend?
Strategic and tactical planning is probably the most important business activity This course sets a new direction for planners at all levels by taking account of the rapidly changing business environment in a much more structured way than other, older, models. The two day Case Study Workshop allows delegates to put theory into practice using the new tools and techniques.

Senior management commitment to the planning process is vital to the success of this area of the business. Stories abound about the failure of MRPII systems and this is partly due to the lack of direction from senior management. It is essential that they recognise the need to use MRPII processes to manage the relationships between the sales and marketing groups on the demand side, and the manufacturing and other operational departments on the supply side. Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) is the process by which senior management commit to the planning process. Experience has shown that strong S&OP processes lead to effective use of MRPII and better achievement of operational plans.
This two day course provides an overview of S&OP and where it fits into Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRPII). The first day is designed to provide an overview of S&OP and will examine the factors for success as well as highlight potential barriers to its success.
Topics covered on day one include:
- What is Sales and Operations Planning?
- Who is involved in the process?
- Where Sales and Operations Planning fits into MRPII?
- How does Sales and Operations Planning fit into my business?
The second day is a more in depth look at S&OP and tailored to those who spend a significant time preparing and analysing the appropriate data. This day is more hands-on and will look at how to implement and operate a viable S&OP process.
Topics covered on day two include:
- What stages need to be covered by the process?
- What are the information needs for the process?
- What are the likely outputs to the process?
- How do we implement the process?
The course is aimed at Logistics Managers, Master Schedulers, Demand Managers, Business Analysts, Planners, Operations Managers and Senior Managers in Sales, Marketing, Finance and Manufacturing. Participants will complete the course with a better understanding of the need for sales and operations planning and an appreciation of who should be involved in the process. They will know how to establish and maintain an effective sales and operations planning process.

As China's economy continues to grow, the country's port sector plays an increasingly important role in facilitating its trade. In order to meet demand, committed investment in port capacity is enormous, with much of the funding for this expansion coming from overseas private-sector sources. This presentation analyses port competition in China on a regional basis, focusing particularly on the relationship between the competitiveness of a port and inland transport infrastructure, accessibility and the geo-political context.

Developing Effective Supply Chain Communications
When:
18 November 2008 - 19 November 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Today’s supply chain depends on getting accurate, complete and timely information to every part of the organisation in contact with suppliers and customers.... and then using that information to make the correct decisions
This two-day course looks initially at the whole communications process and teaches the essential tools and techniques needed to avoid communication breakdowns or derailments. It will consider communication routes and routines both inside and outside the organisation and help identify “touch points” where there is contact...and thus the potential for confusion and conflict!
The second day is spent considering the skills of negotiation, influence and persuasion in depth. Delegates will then apply these new skills to form an action plan to help over come barriers, both internal and external, thereby optimising the communication flow.
Session Outcomes
By the end of the session delegates will be able to:
- Define the communication process and understand why “breakdowns” and “derailments” take place
- Understand why it’s not all ‘words’.
- The arts of paralinguistics and effective listening skills.
- Influence and persuade.
- Negotiate what you want Identify barriers to effective relationships and determine how to overcome them.
- Look for “touchpoints” in the supply chain and optimise communication routines
Why should you attend?
If you ever get the impression that your customers, suppliers and even your own people, simply are not “getting the message”....then this is the course for you. You will consider communication at all levels and in all processes, and learn ways to put in place routes and routines that improve contact and understanding and help remove barriers

Supply Chain Network
Subject TBA
When:
24 November 2008, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London

Customer Focus throughout the Supply Chain
When:
25 November 2008 - 27 November 2008
Where: CILT (UK), Corby Office
Today’s supply chain is totally customer driven and understanding how to identify and measure customer requirements is key.
This three-day course will focus on identifying both internal and external customers. You will learn how to put in place quality and service dimensions against which effective measurement can be made. The measures will show clearly where the organisation can “add value”.
We then look at operational processing within the supply chain. The effect of supplier tiering on quality performance will be examined and we will consider practical tools to measure supply chain efficiency and performance.
Finally we look closely at quality and service improvement within the supply chain. We consider the use of techniques designed to bring customers and suppliers closer to the organisation ensuring that the vision of a “customer focussed” supply chain is realised.
Session Outcomes
By the end of the session you will be able to:
- Identify internal and external customer links
- Establish key quality and service dimensions
- Measure customer satisfaction and act on your findings
- Develop a “process model”
- Get your people involved in improving customer focus
- Evaluate technological solutions to supply chain problems
Why should you attend?
Many organisations pay lip service to customer care. Consider your own experiences with “call centres”, utility companies and wayward suppliers and try telephoning your own company with a problem or complaint! This course cuts to the heart of the problem by helping you identify real customer requirements, both internal and external, and then goes on to put in place really effective measures and action plans to help you met them first time….every time.

A new government-funded research project is assessing whether online retailing is more environmentally sustainable than conventional retailing. The research has involved comparing the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from online and conventional distribution channels for different types of product. Account has been taken of the efficiency of van deliveries on the ‘last mile’ to the home, personal shopping trips, the nature of the upstream supply chains and the return flows of unwanted products.
