CILT Suffolk are holding their inaugural meeting at Amberfield School in Nacton, Ipswich, adjacent to the A14/A12 (to Woodbridge/Lowestoft) juntion. The meeting will explore the opportunities that will be created by the potential building of 2 new EPR reactors by EDF Energy at Sizewell and other related matters
The Felixstowe and Ipswich Group is to be rebranded as CILT(UK) Suffolk with an initial meeting to be organised for Wednesday 8th September 2010.
The reason for this change of name is to enable the group to linkup with all CILT(UK) members and prospective members in what is a unique county with diverse logistical requirements, spanning most modes of transport.
Organisations such as The Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, EastPort UK, The Haven Gateway Partnership, First Group, Associated British Ports and Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd Suffolk Coastal District Councils, Suffolk County Council and Freightliner Limited amongst many others are all stakeholders in the County’s transport infrastructure. These added to 260+ CILT members create a think-tank of almost unfathomable potential.
CILT(UK) Suffolk can provide a forum to
• Discuss topical issues with decision makers in Suffolk and the wider logistical world
• Create a useful and productive networking group meeting in locations across the County
• Provide opportunities for Continuing Professional Development
• Explain the benefits of CILT membership to members and non-members alike

The event will cover the following:
• How procurement professionals can add value beyond simple price negotiations
• Different companies’ approaches to Logistics Procurement
• Considerations when tendering logistics services
• E-procurement tools and techniques

Supply Chain Network
The Logistics of Tea - from Bush to Cup
When:
13 September 2010, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Speaker: Chris Robinson and Christine Gray, Tetley
Chris and Christine, both from Tetley, will be doing a joint presentation to the group on the company's supply chain, including:
- An introduction to Tata Global Beverages
- The Logistics of Tea - from Bush to Cup, and
- A brief overview of Logistics India.
We're grateful to the University of Bedford for sponsoring this event.
The Supply Chain Network has been running for six years. It was set up as a networking and learning opportunity for younger people working within the supply chain in retailers, manufacturers and logistics providers - we use the word 'young' loosely, ages ranging from 20s-50s - a beating pulse is the important factor!
The group numbers about 50 people, with 20 typically at any one meeting. We meet about every six weeks or so in a pub in central London. Networking normally starts from 6pm onwards with snacks at 6.30pm and the 'formal' presentation from 7pm, with more networking afterwards. We aim to have a mix of 'experts' and presentations from within the group. The environment is very informal. The objective is discussion rather than a formal presenter at the front, with presenters encouraged to bring issues as well as experience.
We sometimes have spare spaces, so if you're interested in joining us, please contact Kirsten Tisdale - put Supply Chain Network in the comments box.

Outline
The principles of highway engineering apply not only to the construction of major new road schemes but also to smaller improvements such as carriageway widening, traffic calming, traffic management, cycle ways, residential road design and construction and maintenance schemes.
This two-day course considers the roles and responsibilities of highway authorities and their consultants and guides participants through the highways design, implementation, contractural and maintenance processes.
Who should attend?
The course is particularly appropriate for recent recruits to consultants, developers and highways authorities working in design and maintenance departments, non civil engineering graduates and technicians working closely with highway engineers who need to have a greater understanding of highways issues, and more experienced engineers and technicians requiring an update of current legislation, processes and technology.
The course covers a broad spectrum of current highway design practice and construction technology aligned with legislation, CDM and contract procedures. It is particularly appropriate for new recruits as well as more experienced engineers and technicians seeking update.

The Potential Impact of Teleworking on Transport Systems
When:
15 September 2010, 18:00 (for 18:00)
Where: University of Westminister, Regent Campus, London
There has been considerable interest in recent years in the development of ‘teleworking’ (primarily, but not exclusively, working from home rather than a conventional workplace provided by the employer).
In principle, this could substantially reduce commuting, by eliminating the home to work return trip.
In practice, impacts are somewhat more complex – for example, many people may wish to work part of their time as teleworkers, rather than undertake all their work on this basis. In addition to impacts on the transport system, cost and benefits to workers and employers may be identified, and potential impacts on staff productivity.
These issues will be illustrated from work undertaken jointly by the Universities of Westminster, University College London and Imperial College London, together with further studies, and reference to published work by others.
The principal speaker will be Peter White, Professor of Public Transport Systems at the University of Westminster.

Better not Bigger? The Future for Aviation in the UK
When:
16 September 2010
Where: Bircham Dyson Bell, London
The Government pledged in the Queen's speech to bring in an Airport Economic Regulation Bill and proposals designed to improve Britain's major airports through reforming the regulatory framework were recently unveiled by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond MP on 21st July.
The package of measures is designed to put passengers at the heart of how airports are run, encourage competition between airports and promote investment which will make Britain's major airports better, not bigger. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said when unveiling the proposals:
"The way our airports are regulated is in urgent need of reform. The current economic regulation legislation dates from 1986, when the aviation sector looked very different from today.
"We must now put passengers at the heart of how our airports are run. We have already announced that we do not support the building of new runways at Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted. We want to make those airports better, not bigger and that is exactly what these measures will do.
"These changes will help drive passenger-focused investment in airports - such as in new baggage handling equipment or building new modern facilities - and they will also allow economic regulation to be used in a more targeted way and remove unnecessary bureaucracy."
The Government has expressed clear opposition to new runways at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted and has set up a South East Airports taskforce to consider how to improve operations at the major South East airports.
With a National Policy Statement on aviation expected next year, this conference focuses on the impact of these policy developments for the future of aviation in the UK.
The conference will cover the following:
- Developing a new vision for a competitive aviation industry
- Reforming the economic regulation framework and incentivizing airports to improve services
- Driving investment in airports and facilities and improving the passenger experience
- Aviation expansion and meeting climate change targets
- Developing quieter, more fuel efficient aircraft
- The CAA's new responsibilities
- The impact of changes to the planning system on the future of aviation
- The future of aviation - towards the development of a National Policy Statement

Speaker: Mike Campbell, Veolia ES Hampshire Ltd.
The disposal of waste represents the ultimate reverse supply chain. Landfill has become an expensive and unsatisfactory destination for residues that remain despite a rising environmental awareness that has increased the amount that can be recycled. The best current alternative is energy recovery through waste incineration. A high degree of professionalism is needed, however, to minimise the environmental impact. Our visit will show us how this is done in this important Hampshire facility by Veolia plc.

PRT@LHR 2010 - The 2nd Annual Personal Rapid Transit Conference
When:
21 September 2010 - 23 September 2010, 08:30 - 15:00
Where: London Heathrow Airport
Questions and speculation about Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) have been rife for years, but never more so than after BAA announced its intention to commission and build a system as part of its Terminal 5 link to the Business Park at London Heathrow Airport. But what is the future of PRT?
- What were the challenges and successes of the Heathrow PRT scheme?
- What are the real possibilities for PRT systems becoming part of world-wide transport and urban infrastructure?
- Where and how are other schemes being successfully planned?
- How can PRT be reconciled with a historically-significant city?
- Which design and maintenance issues most affect the implementation of a PRT system?
- How do procurement techniques and challenges change when applied to such distinct technology?
Now, as the system enters its final stages of completion, the chance to debate and answer these questions and many more has arisen in the form of the PRT@LHR 2010 conference. On 21st - 23rd September experts, enthusiasts, and even the sceptics from around the world will gather to explore PRT's global prospects.
The event will also include rides on the Heathrow PRT system, a networking evening, a conference dinner and drinks reception.

Developing and Implementing Supply Chain Strategy
When:
21 September 2010, 09:00 (for 09:30)
Where: Unipart House, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG
Research has shown that only 10% of all strategies yield the intended results. Many reasons have been cited for this including the strategies being inappropriate, that they change as soon as they are devised, requirements are not communicated or there are inconsistencies between strategies, measures and actions. Some or all of the above are probably true to some extent. Decisions such as outsourcing, off-shoring, service proposition changes and systems implementation can make or break business. Choosing the right strategies, developing and implementing plans to realise those strategies and managing the resultant changes are vital.
This seminar is intended to help senior teams understand what tools are techniques are available for the efficient development of supply chain strategy, including Competitive Space, Hoshin Kanri, etc, to deliver cost reduction, improve asset turns and/or enhance service. We will also consider how to prevent initiative overload, establish a balance change portfolio and how to monitor strategy execution.

The idea of integrated or coordinated transport was used in legislation for most of the twentieth century, but never did it seem to be achievable because of the different interpretations of integration and often of political ideology and vested interests. Meeting the Transfusion Needs of Patients in Scotland in the face of Anthrax, Pandemic Flu and the Big Freeze

Speaker: Moira Carter, National Donor Services Manager & Paul Milne, National Logistics Manager, Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service
The supply blood components for transfusion are truly unique in that it is difficult to think of another supply chain where the starting material has a choice! Blood is a commodity and, like all other commodities, has its own supply and demand patterns, storage requirements and shelf life characteristics. Unlike most other commodities its availability at the right place, at the right time and in the right condition for the right patient can have an instant life or death impact. The product range manufactured from the donors' life saving gifts have variable shelf lives, from 2 days to 2 years.
This is a unique opportunity to hear two experts in the challenges of meeting the transfusion needs of patients in Scotland during the almost biblical last year; facind, anthrax, pandemic flu and the big freeze!
The meeting will feature a presentation followed by a short tour of the laboratory and donor centre and the organisers guarantee to release members unpunctured at the end of the visit (unless you really want)!

Supply Chain Network
Managing Real-Time Supply Chains
When:
11 October 2010, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Speaker: Jamie Nicholls, Wesupply
Jamie will be speaking to the group about what retailers and suppliers need to know about communication and collaboration in 2010, covering the following areas:
- Can retailers cut excess stock whilst increasing availability? And reduce operational costs? And can this be achieved with a positive impact on suppliers instead of the usual burden of so many new ‘collaborative initiatives’?
- How modern retailers are approaching the challenge of managing the new ‘retail real-time supply chain’, using examples from Sainsbury’s, Poundland, and Screwfix
- The impact this will have on suppliers and how they can get ahead of the game
Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!

Sustainable Transport 2010
Balancing the Needs of the Economy, Environment and Society
When:
20 October 2010
Where: Church House Conference Centre
GovToday's successful 'Securing the Future' series of Conferences continues with Sustainable Transport 2010. Our commitment to the 2008 Climate Change Act and the targets of a reduction in carbon emissions of 34 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050, have shaped the way we conduct our daily lives.
The Government is now focused clearly on the issues ahead: to make Britain a global centre for low carbon transport development, manufacturing and delivery; to provide low carbon transport choices; and most importantly to provide a service that encourages a modal shift in personal travel habits.
Sustainable Transport 2010 - Balancing the Needs of the Economy, Environment and Society will examine the Government's progress to date in achieving this strategy. The policies and implementation processes behind providing the necessary infrastructure to enable higher capacity, the innovation and technology behind green power sources and the transport planning and passenger focus required to create a sustainable network for the future.

Coastal shipping and inland water transport offers an environmentally beneficial alternative to road haulage. It can also appear to be a costly method of moving goods, an important factor during the recovery from the recent recession. But are these cost comparisons fair, or even true? Our speaker, an acknowledged authority on this subject, explains why we might not be hearing the full and fascinating story of how coastal and inland water transport is dealing with its economic and logistical challenges since the onset of the credit crunch.

John Wylde's book of this title catalogues how transport's "holy grail" has been pursued over 150 years up to the last decade, and is popular with research students who find in it hidden gems with surprising relevance to today’s industry structures. The message he invokes is as true as ever – though often ignored! – arguing that control is of much greater importance than ownership. Central and local government planners and operators of road, rail and coastal shipping should come and hear him.

Supply Chain Network - TBA
When:
15 November 2010, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!
The Supply Chain Network has been running for over five years.

This is a chance to see the Olympic Stadium and the Logistic problems and solutions that have been developed to enable this great engineering project to.
The 27th July marks just 2 years to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and the 29th August marks 2 years to go until the Paralympic Games.
This is a very exciting time to visit the Park, with the venues now transforming the skyline of East London.
Over the past two years;
• The Stadium’s external structure now complete, the cable net roof has been lifted into place and the lighting rigs that take it to full height will be completed in March.
• The power for the Olympic Park has switched underground and the 52 electricity pylons that previously dominated the landscape have been removed. There are now 6km of tunnels below the Olympic park and they run 30 metres deep below the surface. The tunnels were finished on time last year and now 200km of electrical cables have now been installed – enough to stretch from London to Nottingham. This project was completed on time and on budget.
• Almost all of the cleaning and clearing of the Olympic Park has been completed. In total more than 200 buildings were demolished on site, with 97% of the materials by weight recycled, (well over the 90% target).
• The Aquatics Centre roof structure has been completed with the work on the building’s structure well underway.
• Building work is underway on all 11 of the Olympic Village plots.

Maybe it is time to remind ourselves of the joy of travelling. Perhaps we should embrace a motto “he who goes softly goes safely, he who goes safely goes far” from Italy, the country that inspired the slow food movement.
Lower speed limits would lower carbon dioxide emissions more quickly and effectively than any other single measure. With the concerns about peak oil, is part of the route towards sustainable travel to slow down and sometimes leave the car behind?

Sustainable Aviation: What on Earth Does it Mean?
When:
7 December 2010, 19:00 (for 19:30) - 21:00
Where: Room U020, Brockington Building, Loughborough University
Speaker: Professor Callum Thomas, Centre for Air Transport & The Environment (CATE), Manchester Metropolitan University
Current patterns of trade, migration and political affiliation across the Global economy have, to a very significant extent, been shaped by the growth and development of air transport industry over the past 50 years. The social and economic benefits of such growth have been significant, but so too have been the adverse environmental consequences. Aviation environmental impacts have become so great that they threaten the future growth of the industry and the role it will play in a low carbon economy of the second half of the 20th Century.
20,000 Brits went on holiday in Greece in 1950. Last year the figure had reached 2.5 million. How many will go there in 2050?

BESI has been supplanted by Countdown and now i-bus is on its way. What are these things? BESI was the means by which the position of buses in service was displayed to the controller who could then regulate the service according to traffic congestion. Countdown is the waiting passenger's visible indicator at bus stops showing when the next bus is due. Simon Reed will tell us about i-bus developments and plans for the future dissemination of information of buses in service and improvements compared with the current systems.

We all live in a fast moving society where we want everything now and supplying this need usially involves a supply chain, but do we understand what this involves. This game aims to explain the supply chain and in particular the interaction between sales and marketing, raw material suppliers, production, logistics and the customer by simulating the supply of a product and identifying where problems may occur and improvements can be made. The game is very practical and suited to an audience who like "hands on”participation and perhaps a little "fun" as well.

The Strathspey Railway opened in 1978 a five-mile stretch of the original Highland Main Line from Aviemore to Boat of Garten as a heritage operation. Extension in 2002 to Broomhill brought it within tantalising range of Grantown-on-Spey, but the final stretch with its potential public transport benefit requires Transport Scotland to deliver realignment of the A95 at Gaich. Douglas Norris is a Director of the Railway, and looks at its development as a major asset to the tourist economy.

Aviation's biggest long term challenge is its environmental footprint; policies are being suggested for curtailing growth and investing in rail yet the knowledge of aviation's impact, particularily on climate change, is incomplete. The potential for scientific and technological progress with new fuels, lighter airframes and different engines also needs to be better understood.

Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!
The Supply Chain Network has been running for over five years.

Environmental Supply Chains
Seminar in partnership with Unipart Expert Practices
When:
1 February 2011, 09:00 (for 09:30)
Where: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG
Whatever our position in the supply chain, we are all being tasked with minimising our environmental impact. The concept of carbon footprint has become a common and inseparable element in the measurement and disclosure of organisations green credentials. As a result, businesses in general and particularly supply chain operations (with the publicly poor image of gas guzzling transportation) are increasingly turning their attention to measuring, reducing and offsetting their environmental footprint.
In this seminar we will discuss the sources of carbon and other environmental factors, measurement and quantification methods, like Activity Based Carbon and Carbon to Market, linking these to typical cost saving opportunities. We will also showcase work that has been undertaken in the Unipart Group to sustainably reduce the company’s environmental impact.

Congestion, delays, potholes and ungritted roads are the motorist’s nightmare. The recession has given a bit of breathing space in traffic growth but demand is still likely to increase substantially over the next decade. Cutbacks will mean fewer road improvements and maybe less for road maintenance. How can highway and traffic engineers cope with this seemingly intractable challenge?

Although around 40% of all trips made in the UK are of two miles or less, motorised modes still dominate most transport planners' thinking. The potential of the so-called 'soft modes' to reduce congestion, cut emissions and minimise the climate change impact of transport is enormous - but is enough being done?
At the same time, access to - even quite local - facilities for those unable to use most public transport services remains difficult. Could solutions to both of these issues complement each other?

Supply Chain Network - TBA
When:
7 March 2011, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!

Improving On-Shelf Availability in the Retail Sector
Seminar in partnership with Unipart Expert Practices
When:
15 March 2011, 09:00 (for 09:30)
Where: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG
Since the ECR programme was established in 1996, retailers and suppliers across the world have been working together with the objectives of reducing supply chain costs and improving ‘on shelf’ availability. It is difficult to know if costs have been reduced significantly, but there is no doubt that there is a different working relationship between retailers and their suppliers and it would seem reasonable to assume that at a tactical level, there has been a reduction in costs.
However, the IGDs availability survey, which has been undertaken every quarter since 2004, shows that any improvement in availability is at best marginal, with results hovering between 96% and 97%.
Evidence suggests that 70% of availability issues are the result of in-store errors. There are many reasons for this, all of which can be addressed by the application of sound management techniques, as outlined in this seminar.
This seminar will provide managers with the opportunity to:
• Consider the causes of failure in a retail context and identify ‘root causes’
• Understand ‘best practice’
• Consider how ‘best practice’ can be applied in their environment
• Start to develop their own action plans

Developing and Implementing Supply Chain Strategy
Seminar in partnership with Unipart Expert Practices
When:
17 May 2011, 09:00 (for 09:30)
Where: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG

Operators and transport authorities' views differ on the merits of quality bus partnerships, quality contracts or other arrangements for securing bus services. Now the bus industry is faced with budget cuts, loss of grants and economic uncertainty. In many areas, services are being cut, evening and weekend journeys are being lost and school services are under pressure. How can the industry respond to this situation? What are the most promising ways forward to ensure quality services at an affordable price?

Supply Chain Network - TBA
When:
20 June 2011, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!
