Keith Jones retired in 2007 from Aberdeenshire Council as one of 3 Heads of Law and Administration, after a career of over 31 years in local government, largely in a senior capacity. He joined the former Kincardine and Deeside Distict Council in 1975 having worked for a few years in private legal practice. Hybrid Bus Operation - Is it the way forward?

Speaker: Andy Boulton, Technical Sales Manager, Alexander Dennis
For our annual meeting, held exceptionally in Oxford, we turn to a topic of great topical interest in the Thames Valley - air quality and traffic congestion. Since the Government's Green Bus Fund prompted the widening of interest in hybrid buses, these have been built in considerable numbers. Four local operators, Stagecoach in Oxford, Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel and Reading Buses, now have hybrid double-deckers in their fleets.
Andy will describe the development of today's hybrids and discuss their operation and the future of hybrids generally.
This is an ideal opportunity to learn more about the topic and meet up with other CILT members and guests. Everybody is welcome - please invite a guest as we welcome non-members to sample what our Institute has to offer.

Although the majority of bus services in Greater Manchester are run by three of the 'big four' - Stagecoach, First and Arriva – over 40 other companies operate some services.
These fulfil an important role, particularly in areas and at times which larger operators do not cover. Without the resources of their larger competitors, they face similar problems of vehicle provision and maintenance, staffing, fuel costs, congestion, road works and communication.
An operator representative will describe the issues and constraints, problems and successes they have faced.

Speaker: Geoff Inskip, Chief Executive, Centro-West Midlands ITA & Chair of PTEG
Geoff Inskip will speak about the scope for expanding light rail by converting existing local rail services. Considerable potential exists to deliver improved passenger services through this means by converting existing local rail services to either tramway or light rail. Supply Chain Network
CILT Strategy
When:
27 February 2012, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Speaker: Neil Ashworth, Chairman CILT
Neil will be speaking to the group again, but this time on CILT Strategy, in his capacity as Chairman of our Institute - Neil has been one of London Region's Supply Chain Network supporters since its foundation in 2004.
Why not sponsor one of our events and a link to your website could be here!
The Supply Chain Network has been running since September 2004. It was set up as a networking and learning opportunity for younger people working within the supply chain in retailers, manufacturers and logistics providers - we use the word 'young' loosely, ages ranging from 20s-50s - a beating pulse is the important factor!
The group numbers about 50 people, with 20 typically at any one meeting. We meet about every six weeks or so in a pub in central London. Networking normally starts from 6pm onwards with snacks at 6.30pm and the 'formal' presentation from 7pm, with more networking afterwards. We aim to have a mix of 'experts' and presentations from within the group. The environment is very informal. The objective is discussion rather than a formal presenter at the front, with presenters encouraged to bring issues as well as experience.
We sometimes have spare spaces, so if you're interested in joining us, please contact Kirsten Tisdale - put Supply Chain Network in the comments box.

Russia is and always has been a nightmare destination for logisticians and supply chain professionals. The sheer scale of the country, the climate, infrastructure, equipment, the language, the people, the perceived business culture - or as Boney M put it "Oh Those Russians".
Napoleon and Hitler both tried setting up supply chains; both were defeated. Things have changed and logistics is a top profession amongst young Russians. A summary of the last 20 years with anecdotes will help remove the mystery, making you feel positive about Russian logistics.

Improving on-shelf availability in the retail sector (or cash in the bank)
Seminar in partnership with Unipart Expert Practices
When:
14 March 2012, 09:30 (for 09:45) - 16:30
Where: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG
Overview
Since the ECR programme was established in 1996, retailers and suppliers across the world have been working together with the objectives of reducing supply chain costs and improving ‘on shelf’ availability. It is difficult to know if costs have been reduced significantly, but there is no doubt that there is a different working relationship between retailers and their suppliers and it would seem reasonable to assume that at a tactical level, there has been a reduction in costs.
However, the IGDs availability survey, which has been undertaken every quarter since 2004, shows that any improvement in availability is at best marginal, with results hovering between 96% and 97%
Evidence suggests that 70% of availability issues are the result of in-store errors. There are many reasons for this, all of which can be addressed by the application of sound management techniques, as outlined in this seminar.
Course Content
This seminar will provide managers with the opportunity to:
- Consider the causes of failure in a retail context and root causes
- Understand the relevant best practice
- Consider how best practice can be applied in their environment
- Start to develop their own action plans
Who is this course for?
This workshop is designed for supply chain managers and operational managers from the retail supply chain.
Due to the nature of the seminar, organisations that Unipart deem to be competitive to their business will be unable to attend.

Sustainable Urban Transport - An unachievable myth or a worthwhile goal?
Can the diverse and often conflicting demands of multimodal stakeholders be balanced?
When:
15 March 2012, 17:15 (for 18:30) - 21:00
Where: Cantor Building (formerly known as the Furnival Building), Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, S1 1WB
Meeting point:
Please log in to see the meeting point
Speaker: Yaron Hollander, Strategy and Policy Manager, South Yorkshire PTE; Giles Fearnley FCILT, Managing Director UK Bus, FirstGroup; Steve Biddle, Regional Director, Road Haulage Association
The freight and passenger transport sectors have always presented a challenge but increasing, often conflicting, demands now make this a priority for our industry. Public expectations continue to grow and the demands on the requirement for transport are unlikely to diminish. Whether this be in terms of moving people or goods, it is unlikely anyone would accept a reduction in service.
As in the UK, the majority of a nation’s population continue to live in urban conurbations, bringing with it the need to move people and goods effectively.
This situation is unlikely to change, although, a national government’s planning policy might influence where such urban developments occur. In recent years, transport demand has altered due to the many social and demographic changes, such as, the 24hour society, out of town shopping, people not working where they live, urban re-generation, on-line shopping, increased personal mobility, etc.
For our 2012 Seminar our speakers will be asked to address the issues of the sustainability of urban transport for people and goods not only from the view point of their own specialism but also on the wider community. Issues covered will include environmental issues, operating costs, customer expectations, infrastructure, investment and Legislation issues.
The event will be chaired by Dr. Martin Howarth, Head of Engineering and Mathematics Department, Sheffield Hallam University.

Bonded Warehousing - How to take advantage of HM Customs
When:

Speaker: Nigel Wilson, Logistics Manager, Madison
To those not experienced in it, bonded warehousing can seem like a dark art.
The main commercial benefit is the delayed payment of import duty and VAT on inbound cargo which can have a significant impact on cash flow; but there are other advantages as well.
Nigel Wilson has many years experience of running dry bonded warehouses so will be able to show how to optimise the management of duty and VAT within a warehousing environment as well as provide some guidance around the many acronyms that apply to CFSP.

Shoreham Port Development
When:
20 March 2012, 18:30 (for 19:00) - 21:00
Where: Harlequin Theatre, Warwick Crescent, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 1NN
Speaker: Rodney Lunn, Chief Executive, Shoreham Port
Having just completed our portmasterplan, which covers the next 20 years, I would talk about Shoreham Port today, the current developments we have taking place now, and where we see the port going. Shoreham Port is one of the best kept secrets of Sussex. We handle around 900 commercial ships per year; and as a niche south coast port, we service mainly the hinterland of the SE/Sussex area. Part of the role of the port is to assist the transport network of the UK, for example, one medium sized coastal tanker carrying petrol and diesel for the Texaco petrol stations in Sussex arrives each week from Milford Haven, and this one tanker keeps approximately 200 road tankers off the roads coming up from Wales to Sussex. This is just one cargo, and there are many others, for example, salt / grain / peat, that pass through the port.

Shortsea shipping: The slow route to sustainability?
When:

Where: University of Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College Park Row, Greenwich, London, SE10 9LS

Speaker: Dr. Merv Rowlinson, Shipping & Intermodal Logistics Research, Southampton, London & Hamburg
The presentation will address the problematic issues of increasing shortsea, coastal and inland shipping's share of domestic and itra-European freight trade for both Britain and Ireland.
Despite the environmental advantages of water transport and the attention that shortsea shipping has attracted in political circles, both nationally and at European levels, increasing market share has proved difficult. Investigations into shortsea shipping's role and evidence of success and failure in the supply chain will be discussed.
Dr Rowlinson will go on to provide fresh analysis to his 2008 published work: Shipping Freight by Water in Britain and Ireland: Calculating Economic Cost and environmental Opportunities.

For many, logistics experts, customs and foreign trade regulations are too “niche” to grapple with and relevant import and export tasks are sometimes considered more as a necessary burden rather than an opportunity to save costs or even gain a competitive advantage. Customs experts agree that companies managing global trade and customs rules to their advantage, and integrate them into their overall strategy, will be more competitive. Faster border clearance and smooth import and export handling ensure that goods are available on time, delivery promises can be kept, and – most importantly – a happy customer receives the product as ordered.
This conference will introduce most current customs regulations, the risks associated with non-compliance with customs and global trade regulations, current trends, challenges and available solutions, and importantly, will offer case-studies detailing the benefits of customs compliance programmes to streamline business processes and deliver cost savings in key areas of the supply chain.

Queensway Mersey Tunnel

Meeting point:

Speaker: Alison Smith, Merseytravel
A presentation about the design, construction and operation of the older of the two Mersey road tunnels will be followed by a tour of the ventilation building and part of the tunnel itself.
In 1922 Sir Archibald Salvidge proposed a report to Liverpool City Council to enquire into the possibility of either a tunnel or bridge to improve traffic facilities across the Mersey. The option of a bridge was strongly rejected and it was reported that a double-deck road tunnel would cost less to construct and offer considerable economy in maintenance.
On 8 August 1925 a Private Bill authorised the project, and the setting up of the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee. On 16 December 1925 HRH the Princess Royal switched on the power to the pneumatic drills and work began. Working from both sides of the river, when the two work forces met there was a divergence of less than one inch. Some 1,200,000 tons of rock and gravel were excavated. This was replaced with 82,000 tons of cast iron and 270,000 tons of concrete.
The Queensway tunnel was opened by King George V on 18 July 1934; having cost £8 million to construct. At the time it was the biggest single municipal enterprise undertaken in Britain. The main tunnel is 44 feet in diameter, and carries four lanes of traffic for just over two miles between Liverpool and Birkenhead, with a branch tunnel exit at Liverpool Docks. There was originally another tunnel opening at Birkenhead Docks, but that has been closed now for some time.

Speaker: Les Richings FCILT, Director, LRT Ltd
We all live in a fast moving society where we want everything now and supplying this need usually involves a supply chain, but do we understand what this involves. This game aims to explain the supply chain and in particular the interaction between sales and marketing, raw material suppliers, production, logistics and the customer by simulating the supply of a product and identifying where problems may occur and improvements can be made.
The game is very practical and suited to an audience who like "hands on” participation and perhaps a little "fun" as well.

Since 2005, Peel Ports have jointly operated the Port of Liverpool, and the Manchester Ship Canal as a 44-mile "linear port".
In publishing their Port Master Plan in 2011, Peel laid out their intentions to develop several significant projects, both to expand Port capacity and capability -including up to five multi-modal inland Ports, most notably at Salford - and to facilitate "added value" businesses such as warehousing, processing plants and customer-focused operations.
Gary will provide an informed update on progress with these plans.

Supply Chain Network
Subject TBA
When:
30 April 2012, 18:00 (for 19:00)
Where: Central London
Speaker: TBA

Developing and Implementing Supply Chain Strategy
Seminar in partnership with Unipart Expert Practices
When:
15 May 2012, 09:30 (for 09:45) - 16:30
Where: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG
Overview
Research has shown that only 10% of all strategies yield the intended results. Many reasons have been cited for this, including the strategies being inappropriate, their changing as soon as they are devised, their requirements not being communicated or inconsistencies between strategies, measures and actions. Some, or all, of the above are probably true to some extent. Decisions such as outsourcing, off-shoring, service proposition changes and systems implementation can make or break a business. Choosing the right strategies, developing and implementing plans to realise those strategies and managing the resultant changes are vital.
Course Content
This seminar is intended to help senior teams understand what tools and techniques are available for the efficient development of supply chain strategy, including Competitive Space, Hoshin Kanri, etc, to deliver cost reduction, improve asset turns and/or enhance service. We will also consider how to prevent initiative overload, establish a balance change portfolio and how to monitor strategy execution.
Who is this course for?
This master class is designed for those responsible for forming supply chain strategy.
Due to the nature of the seminar, organisations that Unipart deem to be competitive to their business will be unable to attend.

The "Airport City" development would be one of the largest in Europe, bringing £600 Million of investment to a 60-acre site adjacent to Manchester Airport.
Designed to support international business - with many employees potentially flying in to work there - the project could generate up to 7,000 jobs. But its success will depend on having the transport connectivity and capacity to service a new "town centre" at the Airport.
The Airport development team and public transport operators will outline how they are working to meet this challenge.
