Information Management

Unipart Logo

Sponsored by Unipart Logistics

For outstanding development in information technology or management.

Developments can include the use of new or existing technology in an innovative manner.  Entries will be judged with particular regard for how the innovation enhances the business process and to the creative use of effective user interfaces for all involved.

And the winner is:

  • Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited
Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited

Winner - Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited
Hutchison Ports Ltd has met the challenge of matching customer needs with transport requirements. A large vessel may discharge 3000 containers; a major challenge for transport departments and a major opportunity to avoid ‘empty running' costs. Their PARIS transport planning system matches import deliveries with export collections, optimizes road routings and monitors the results. The system uses a real time algorithm, enhanced by the planners' knowledge captured during the implementation. Daily load matching has risen from 5% to 30%. There have been significant savings in planning personnel; in inbound transport and in empty container handling.

Finalists:

  • DPD
DPD's achievement is to address the problem of failed home deliveries by providing customers with a one hour window in which their package will arrive.  Their system "Predict" provides the home shopper with an SMS or email in the brand of the seller, offering a precise one hour window. The customer can accept or reschedule.  The system then organizes the number of drops per delivery route, provides navigation instructions and then monitors progress through GPS.  This has achieved a 20% improvement in service; reductions in operating costs, in fuel consumption and has helped gain new customers.
  • Palletline plc
Palletline plc's "Project Vision" provides an integrated infrastructure through a networked system linking their 60 partners' own IT systems. Innovations include freight scanning with a pallet photograph. The effectiveness of the new Belgravium scanner is shown by the reduction from 10 to 3 minutes per vehicle: a major reduction in man-hours. Proof of delivery and failure identification has been helped by capturing a digital signature together with a GPS location and date stamp. The introduction of a ‘virtual bay' enables improved truck capacity planning and a ‘virtual hub' allows external pallet exchanges between carriers, reducing unnecessary running costs.
