WINNER: Argos Home Delivery UK and DHL Supply Chain
Already making over 4.3 million home deliveries per annum, Argos Direct has responded to increased competition through improving the performance of its supply chain, focusing on both efficiency and customer service.
In two years it has reduced customer delivery failures by a third and customer complaints by more than 50%, and increased on-time deliveries to over 98%. Building on over 200 suggestions from staff it has increased deliveries per vehicle by 14% and reduced fleet mileage and fuel usage by over 8%, contributing to a carbon footprint reduction of 19% in one year.
FINALIST: AstraZeneca and NYK Logistics
AstraZeneca's European supply chain comprised 9 manufacturing plants managing temperature-controlled movements of materials and finished packs across 27 countries. This has been re-engineered into a single network, managed by NYK Logistics.
Central management has facilitated pan-European invoicing, cost-effective delivery of smaller shipments and shipment consolidation with other pharmaceutical companies.
As a result they have been able to adopt a demand-pull methodology to increase load fill by 20%, reduce inventory by 50%, annual mileage by 7% and costs per pallet by 25%. All of this was implemented to time and under budget, whilst continuing to meet the service KPIs.
FINALIST: Indesit Company UK
Indesit Company Logistics operates multi-drop and home delivery services on its own account. Whilst handling growth of 20% it has increased its value to the company through service improvements and cost savings. It has employed internal and external benchmarking, techniques such as root cause analysis and a continual programme of workshops based around customer feedback. Against a reduction in the incidence of customers not in and complaints, deliveries on time have improved by 2.5% in 2 years. In parallel the cost per unit has been reduced by 7% and waste volume by over 50%, improving its environmental impact.
