Lancashire & Cumbria Group Event

Future Fuel

The latest meeting by Lancashire & Cumbria Group continued the theme of examining alternatives to current mineral based fuel systems, with two presentations at Lancashire County Hall in Preston. The first presentation was from Paul Clarke of Technical Editing Services and Adrian Meakin of Future Fuel Technology.

Paul through his work on the http://www.green-car-guide.com/ web site, outlined a surprising range of options in order to reduce carbon footprint and emissions but somehow still enjoy driving.

During a very detailed presentation, perhaps the most startling fact was that BMW had reinvented itself as a ‘green car manufacturer' and that the latest 318i D is now as economical as a Smart Car. Both cars can achieve 60.1 mpg.  Paul challenged conventional eco thinking on the motor vehicle and made a very strong case for technical solutions to reducing emissions and carbon footprint.

This theme was continued by Adrian Meakin who despite some commercial sensitivity highlighted the benefits of converting HGVs to use LPG. Future Fuel Technology has teamed up with the Alliance & Leicester to offer this type of converted vehicle on contract hire. Adrian was quick to point out that not all operators would benefit from such a conversion and that each conversion had not only to be assessed from the environmental point of view but also if the operator would gain any benefit from the conversion. For the right operation which could use the technology then the benefits would be significant.

The diverse audience of industry, students and other interested parties continued to debate the issues raised for a considerable time after the meeting.
