Faculties & Policies

Ports, Forwarding & Maritime Forum

Your Institute is introducing some changes, making us more open and relevant to you, whichever sector of logistics or transport you work in.

We are replacing the four Faculties with eight Professional Sectors. These Professional Sectors will provide specialist activity for a particular area of interest whilst continuing to offer opportunity and involvement across the profession.

What you need to do...

We are now asking all members to update their details and tell us which Professional Sectors and Forums they want to belong to as soon as possible. You can do this in a number of ways - online through ‘My Membership', complete the Member Selection form that you will shortly receive in Focus, or complete the form included on the Current Awareness Bulletin over the next few weeks.

Please note, you can now belong to as many Professional Sectors and Forums as you wish.

Should you wish to make your selections online, please remember that you will need to create your password to login if you have not already done so. A short guide to making your selection online is available here.

Ports, Forwarding & Maritime Forum

Welcome to the Ports, Forwarding & Maritime Forum which is housed within the Transport Faculty.

Our purpose is to provide you with a platform to explore the critical issues of the day affecting your business. In addition, to provide a voice to communicate with other forums within the faculty and to outside bodies which affect your working life.

Based in the Southern Region? The Ports, Forwarding and Maritime Forum Committee would like to meet you. Click here for further details.

We are currently compiling a list of possible presentations that can be offered in each of the Institute's Regions and Groups, so far we have speakers available on the following subjects:

  • Freight forwarding in the supply chain
  • Carriage of dangerous goods
  • Freight insurance
  • Stuffing of containers - ignorance is not an excuse
  • Role of the marine cargo surveyor
  • Role of British waterways to beat congestion and reduce cost
  • Maritime security
  • Ispm15 dunnage regulations

If there are other topics on which you would like a presentation please contact us and we will try and source an experienced speaker.

The Forum has had representation at the following:

2008

  • Reducing air pollution from shipping & ports - 21st October 2008, London
  • Rotterdam Port Promotion Council/ABP/Hull City Council presentation - 28th October 2008, Anfield Stadium, Liverpool
  • ELUPEG - Movement by water - 29th/30th October 2008, Teeside
  • Presentation by npower & Strategic Marine Services on proposed Triton Knoll offshore windfarm - 27th November 2008 , Holiday Inn, Hull
  • 'Forwarder's rule ... say's who?'  - A presentation and debate - 9th December 2008, London

 2009

  • Marine & coastal access bill presentation by Huw Incarra-Davies MP, parliamentary under-secretary of state (Minister for the natural and marine environment, wildlife and rural affairs) - 7th January 2009, Holiday Inn, Hull
  • Attendance at Maritime Statistics Advisory Group - 9th January 2009, London
  • AIS Live - Ship tracking in the 21st century - 21st January 2009, London

We produce a monthly newsletter which gives valuable information as to what is happening accross the whole spectre of the industry.

Following an initial meeting in December 2009 to asses potential interest, a southern branch of the Ports, Forwarding & Maritime  Forum has been established and an inaugural meeting will take place in London on 3rd March 2010. Any member who is interested in attending this meeting or wishing more detail should contact Dennis Morris on email at dennis.morris@gkndriveline.com.

Future plans

  • Proposed visit/presentation at teesport
  • Presentations on the work of vessel tracking services (vts) around the county
  • Birmingham multi-modal exhibition, 28th-30th April 2009

New group

We are considering forming a Ports and Terminals Security Working Group within the ports.  With the forthcoming 2012 olympics it is important to consider how current security operations may impact on port operators and if additional measures are required. In addition, members must always be aware of current requirements and any forthcoming legislation.

Anyone interested should contact the Forum Chairmen.

Other organisations

The Container Shipping Information Service (CSIS) has launched a web site, being a public awareness drive. The web site is designed to appeal to a broad audience and features useful information such as a 'did you know' section and a 'jargon buster'.

Department for Transport maritime statistics for 2007 are now available here.

We hope to shortly announce a series of presentations around the country in 2009 once the activist/speaker list is complete.

The Forum would be keen to learn from members of any suggested topics that  would be of interest in their Region/Group.

The Forum is indebted to Richard Martin FCILT, Russ Garbutt FCILT, and Bill Oakes FCILT for their invaluable contributions.
