Richard McLeish Award 2006

Many Northern members will have had the benefit of Richard's inspirational teaching. In the early 1990s he taught full time on the Chartered Institute of Transport (UK)’s Qualifying Examinations programme at Manchester College of Arts and Technology. When student numbers fell following bus deregulation and rail privatisation, he became a self-employed author, lecturer and consultant. He was always generous with his time and went out of his way to support, encourage and assist students with whom he came into contact. This was particularly so during his period of self employment when he was involved in CPC teaching at the Centre for Transport Studies in Whalley, the CIT Advanced Diploma at Park Lane College Leeds, and the BSc and Diploma in Logistics at Huddersfield University. He also lectured on the MA in Transport Planning Courses at Sheffield Hallam University.

After his untimely death at the age of 49 a group of friends, students and colleagues suggested that the Institute should promote an award in his memory. This award has been funded by the former Transport Studies Organisation, Lancashire & Cumbria Group - of which Richard McLeish was the inaugural Chairman, West & North Yorkshire Group - where he was Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Transport Branch, and Greater Manchester Group were he had also been an important active member.

The award may be made to any member of the North East or North West Region, who is working towards a qualification relevant to the Institute’s area of operation in recognition of progress and achievement in transport or logistics. For the 2006 award, the progress or achievement must have occurred in the period from 1st September 2004 to 1st March 2006.

The winner will receive a cash prize of £100.00 and be presented with the Richard McLeish Trophy, an attractive collector’s piece of Mallard leaving York Station, which he or she will then hold for one year.
