The Northampton College

Centre name: The Northampton College

Centre contact: Peter Ellement MILT

Which CILT(UK) qualifications are offered by your organisation?
Level 2 Introductory Certificate in Logistics and Transport
Level 3 Certificate in Logistics and Transport
Level 4 Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport

What pre-course guidance is given? We offer an initial personal interview, and if the individual is on our Skills for Logistics programme, we also offer an initial assessment, including a professional discussion and the agreement of a Personal Learning Plan outlining how the qualification is going to be delivered.

What method of study is used? The more traditional evening class is available, with the Level 2 Introductory Certificate being offered one night a week for three hours, leading to the qualification completed within one year. The Level 3 Certificate is also offered on this basis, with the management module being taught on a six-month programme one evening a week until the February examination. The optional modules are the offered on a supported distance learning basis, with either real or e-tutor support.

How long has the organisation been a CILT(UK) centre? Northampton College has been a CILT(UK) centre for two years, and our partner college Daventry College for three years. Qualifications are offered from both campuses managed by the same team.

How long have you been at your organisation? One year.

What is your professional experience? My background is in the storage equipment industry, having held senior positions in Apex Storage Systems – now a division of Linpac Materials Handling – and SSI Schaefer for over 12 years. Prior to that I held senior positions in the defence industry, with a lot of involvement in defence logistics.

Who are the key logistics and transport personnel in your organisation? Peter Ellement MILT, Logistics Centre Manager; Colin Mealor, Manager, Daventry Campus; Mike Armitage FCILT, Consultant; Clifford Groom, MILT, Consultant.

What other relevant training courses do you offer? Northampton College has its own training company, Powerdriver, which offers a full range of transport qualifications covering LGV, CPC and FLT programmes. The college is also working with the Northants Logistics Forum to develop new programmes delivering CILT(UK) qualifications in bespoke ways to the industry.

What future developments are planned within your organisation in relation to logistics and transport qualifications? In 2005 we will be providing a Foundation Degree in Logistics, in conjunction with University College Northampton. This will allow individuals with no existing qualifications to embark on a work-based degree programme leading to an academic qualification. We have recently applied for funding for a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Logistics. If approved, the plan is to develop a one-stop-shop in the East Midlands, where companies can come and be directed to the nearest and most suitably qualified provider to deliver their training needs.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering entering the logistics and transport profession? They should discuss with us the relevant qualification for them, based on their education and experience to date, and sign up to a programme. This will assist their employment and progression prospects in the industry.
