Passenger Transport

PTRC Logo Small

Sponsored by PTRC

For outstanding achievement in the transport of passengers by road, rail, water or air.

WINNER: London Underground - Platform Humps Project

London Underground's aim is to provide a "turn up and go" service which allows all passengers the greatest level of independent access and level access for wheelchair users.  The humps are a raised section of platform which provide this level access without the whole of a platform having to be rebuilt. They are installed over a standard weekend track possession (56 hours). Disabled persons groups have said they "are very pleased with LU's development of platform humps as a pragmatic solution to step free access within their network".  It is a very imaginative and ingenious solution for easy wheelchair access.

FINALIST: City and Council of Swansea

The Landore Express Bus Route Stage 2 utilises, in an imaginative way, the limited available land footprint adjacent to the railway to provide a dedicated route for buses with improved footpath and cycleway connections. The route bypasses congested roads and exits directly on to Swansea High Street. There is very careful choice of materials and landscaping including masonry cladding and geo-textile and grass seed finish. Since it became operational it is claimed it saves 5 minutes at times of peak traffic which further serves to incentivise the modal shift to park and ride and reduce congestion in the City Centre.

FINALIST: London Underground - Step-free Tube Guide Project

The Step-free Tube Guide is designed to make choosing a step-free route as easy a possible for customers. Stations which have step-free access between the street and platform or step-free interchange between lines, are the only ones included on the map. Information about the step and gap between the train and platform is provided visually, so that it is available to customers at a glance. Customers have responded positively and disabled persons advisory groups have said the guides (offered in two formats) were "really impressive" and "very well received". The guides feature in an accessibility area on the TfL website.
