What are the benefits of work placements?
Benefits
The organisation benefits from having available an enthusiastic graduate/under-graduate who can focus on an aspect of your operation or a specific project for either the summer period or for 9-10 months as part of the student's university degree programme.
Remember, some students will have had some workplace experience. A placement provides an opportunity to research, test and implement change.
Managing and mentoring the student should form part of the management development programme of the staff member responsible.
Many companies decide to employ students that have had a placement with them. It offers an opportunity to 'try before you buy'.
Timescales
You have the choice of a summer placement - 5-10 weeks - or a 1 year placement - i.e. 9-10 months.
Costs
Most companies pay students who undertake a work placement with them. If the project is located away from their home or university, assistance in finding accommodation is normally given.
