Welcome to CILT Ports Maritime & Waterways

Welcome to CILT's Ports, Maritime & Waterways Professional Sector.

Our purpose is to provide you with a platform to explore the critical issues of the day affecting you and your business. We aim to cover the interests of all those involved in waterborne transport both domestically and internationally. This sector's work will include freight, trade, port operations, and safety matters.

What the Sector includes:-

  • Report on issues in ports, UK shipping, and waterways.
  • Attendance at industry seminars to participate and promote the Sector and CILT.
  • Transport policy and the environment - comment, watching brief, and liaison with relevant government departments.
  • Organisation split between two locations - London and the South of England, in addition to the North of England.
  • Arrange presentations and discussion relating to the industry.

The Sector has a number of possible presentations available to Regions and Groups which include:-

  • dealing with dangerous goods
  • stuffing containers
  • weighing containers
  • cargo insurance
  • ports policy
  • role of vessel traffic services
  • AIS Live - ship tracking
  • inland waterways
  • cargo handling
  • Rotterdam Rules - update

A Prestigious Lecture On Shipping

The chairman of a global maritime company is to deliver a lecture at hull university business school.

Dr. Helmut sohmem chairman at bw group limited, will give a talk entitled " shipping and governments : an uneasy partnership"  at the annual peter thompson lecture on october 28th.

He will speak from 6pm, sharing his vast professional experience and discussing involvement of government in the maritime industry.

In its fourth year, the prestigious event is held in recognition of the generosity of dr.thompson obe, lld, jp in endowing a chair in the business school, which is currently held by professor david manachop.

Recently the Southern Committee received a presentation by Freight by Water (http://www.freightbywater.org/). This organisation is hoping to arrange presentations in four key areas - London/Thames, Liverpool/Manchester, Bristol, and Humber with a view to form local working groups.

In April this year attendees at the Annual CILT Shipping Lecture heard a fascinating talk entitled ‘The tail that wagged the dog', which amongst other topics compared vessel costs between UK and major continental ports.

For 2011 the Sector welcomes suggestions for both topics and high level speakers to deliver the annual lecture.

CILT have a number of relevant courses available, including Movement of Goods Level 5, also links to Lloyds Maritime qualifications.
