Professional Sectors & Forums - Accessibility and Inclusion
Chairman: Peter Rayner FCILT
The intention of this recently created Forum is to examine the many different facets of Accessibility to Transport, how they differ in themselves and vary within each mode of transport whether it be Accessibility at Terminals, Accessibility of Vehicles, Accessibility of Information or the ease of obtaining a ticket, be it electronically or face to face. All are key parts of any journey.
The rapidly growing numbers of older people in the population, many of whom have mobility difficulties, make accessibility both an economic and a social imperative: accessible transport is key to enabling disabled and older people to remain independent.

Recent Activity
The Forum is reviewing a number of issues examining Universal Design, Shared Space, Security versus Accessibility, Seamless Travel and in addition developing a suitable definition of 'Accessibility and Inclusion'.
The value of Inclusion in society of the disabled and of persons with restricted mobility is in need of analysis to establish the value to society as a whole. The Forum is considering this currently along with the implications of the disbandment of DPTAC (Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee).
Finally the Forum is concerned that in the September 2010 Survey 'Socially Inclusive Services" and "Rural accessibility" were identified by a large proportion of the membership as areas for cutting spending.
There is much being addressed and much more to address and the Forum welcomes members to engage with this important topic.
