Professional Sectors & Forums - Aviation
Chairman: Vernon Murphy FCILT
The Aviation Forum comprises a group of professionals from the airline and airport sectors that reviews current and proposed policies for aviation and provides, where appropriate, expert advice to government.
The Committee meets four times a year and is active throughout the year in responding to consultations and other events. In 2010 the Government announced a number of new aviation policies, including the decision not to have new runways at Heathrow and Stansted and to set up a South East Airports Task Force. In July 2010 it announced its decisions on airport regulation. The Competition Commission's inquiry into BAA airports continues to rumble on as appeals and tribunals take place. In the mean time, Gatwick Airport has been sold and now operates independently from the BAA Group. The Aviation Forum has contributed to many of the consultations and reviews that have led to these decisions. In 2010, the Aviation Forum drew up a list of priorities and contributed to the Institute's manifesto for the new Government. Our priorities will be to ensure that aviation operates within a strategic framework that enables it to grow within the Government's carbon targets, continues to provide the economic benefits and meet its environmental obligations.
In 2011, the Forum prepared the Institute's response to the Government's consultation on a Sustainable Aviation Framework, which can be found here.
The Chairman of the Aviation Forum Committee, Vernon Murphy, appeared before the House of Common Transport Committee in 2009 and gave evidence about a number of issues which the Aviation Forum has been considering, including capacity, regulation and taxation. The Committee's full report was published in December 2009 and is available in two volumes, Volume I (main report) and Volume II (evidence).
Articles by members of the Committee have appeared in Focus as follows:
