An Introduction...
For many years benchmarking within logistics has been recognised as an important tool for both public and private sector organisations. The benchmarking process involves:
- Using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure your performance;
- Gathering good quality and accurate data;
- Measuring KPI performance against targets;
- Regularly comparing KPIs internally and externally;
- Identifying and understanding differences in performance;
- Sharing best practice to develop new ideas and solutions; and
- Reviewing progress and ensuring continual improvement.
The benefits of a successful benchmarking programme include:
- Identification of areas to improve performance and save money;
- Improvements in performance measurement processes; and
- Quantifiable improvements in performance, efficiency, quality and productivity
