Humber Group - Reports and Presentation
Tour of the Yorkshire Waterways Museum Goole - 9 May 2011
On Monday 9th May 2011 members of the Humber Group enjoyed a tour of the Yorkshire Waterways Musuem at Goole and a boat trip around the Harbour area.
The visit started with a look around the museum which has a number of very interesting static displays. They show the life of barge families, the import and export trade, the transportation of coal through the Aire and Calder Navigation and the creation of the Port of Goole.
We were then treated to a tour of the Port of Goole on the vessel "Telethon Louise", a former ships lifeboat during which our guide, Jane Hasnip explained some of the history of the dock buildings. She went on to describe a number of activities that were happening within the dock area.
We were "driven" expertly around the dock by Chris Hasnip and one of the Group, Les Richings, even managed to take the wheel. Les commented that having a former Ship's Master, Russ Garbutt, in the party in no way added any pressure to his driving the boat, and the group were retuned to the museum in one piece.
The visit ended with a first class buffet after which Russ Garbutt proposed a vote of thanks to all at the Yorkshire Waterways Museum, in particular Jane and Chris along with the event co-ordinator Julie Frost, for a very informative visit.
