Annual Awards for Excellence 2008
The Sir Robert Lawrence Award
Winner: Peter Hendy CBE FCILT, Commissioner, Transport for London
The award was presented by Paul Brooks FCILT, Chairman, CILT(UK)
The Institute gives the Sir Robert Lawrence Award annually to an individual who has made a sustained contribution to logistics and transport - that is something which can definitely be said about the recipient of this year's award.
Peter Hendy joined London Transport as a graduate trainee in 1975, gaining experience in bus operations, before being appointed Managing Director of CentreWest London Buses in 1989 prior to going on to lead a successful buy out by the management and staff in 1994.
In 1998, after the sale to FirstGroup, he became Divisional Director, London and South East and before joining TfL, he was Deputy Director - UK Bus, responsible for FirstGroup bus operations in London and southern England, and a Director of New World First Bus (Hong Kong).
In January 2001, he became TfL's Managing Director of Surface Transport and oversaw the revitalisation of London's Buses. In March 2003, his role widened to include the management of the UK's first congestion charge, London's major roads and traffic management, road safety, walking, cycling and the movement of goods.
In July 2005, he was appointed Chair of the Commission for Integrated Transport and Commissioner of Transport for London in February 2006. Transport for London is one of the world's largest multi-modal transport authorities with a total expenditure of over £7.5bn and around 22,000 staff. TfL runs London Underground and manages the bus network, Docklands Light Railway and London Overground, the Congestion Charging scheme, Croydon Tramlink and 360 miles of London's busiest main roads.
He is a Fellow of this Institute and was awarded the CBE in the 2006 New Year's Honours list for services to public transport and the community in London.
