One year into the ‘credit crunch’ – where are we now, where are we going?
The past year has seen an extraordinary loss of confidence in the global financial system. All major participants
in financial markets have been affected: banks have had their toughest period in recent history, and some have
not lived to tell the tale; hedge funds have gone bankrupt; pension funds and other large institutional investors
have seen large decreases in the value of some of their portfolios; and ratings agencies and central banks have
faced serious questions about their credibility. More seriously, the turbulence of financial markets has
threatened the smooth functioning of the western economies, which are built to a large extent around the
banking system. For example, while UK official interest rates have been cut the average mortgage rate facing
homeowners has increased. The crisis originated in the US but has had major ramifications for the UK,
including the first bank run for over 100 years. This paper asks what we have learned about the causes of the
problems, and how they are they likely to progress from here.

The Impact of Green and Sustainability Initiatives on Global Logistics:Turning Green into Gold
Globalisation, increasing environmental compliance requirements, and supply chain cost pressures are driving
the need for improved sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes and solutions
in all areas of supply chain management. From carbon-footprint reducing logistics network design to
optimised transportation planning and selection, ‘going green’ has moved beyond buzzword status to
become a business imperative that can lower costs and provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Bob’s paper will explore green best practices that Best-in-Class organisations are leveraging today to reduce
overall logistics costs, limit environmental impact, and increase competitive advantage. The business case for
green initiatives hinges on the ability to literally turn green to gold by bridging the gap between good green
intentions and sustainable logistics excellence.
