Supply Chain Training & Consultancy
Centre name: Supply Chain Training & Consultancy (SCTC)
Centre contact: Archie Scott FCILT
Which CILT(UK) qualifications are offered by your organisation? We offer the Introductory Certificate Level 2, Certificate Level 3 and Professional Diploma Level 4. Most of the options we offer are logistics subjects and supply chain based.
What pre-course guidance is given? We consider this aspect of the training process as being very important and not to be rushed into, as all career development plans seek out the people who give honest and fair judgements on what the options are. We want our client to choose us because they feel comfortable about us. Our business is a people business so we cater for people who want to learn.
Our response to an enquiry is:
1. Initial mail or phone call – establish the level of the course needed and collect background information and contact details.
2. Our response to the enquiry will be to mail an information pack.
3. This is then followed by a phone call.
4. If the candidate wants to sign we make a face-to-face meeting or a further phone conversation.
What method of study is used? We offer the taught courses, supported learning and distance learning.
How long has the organisation been a CILT(UK) centre? We have offered CILT(UK) qualifications for seven years, initially as an associate of LTI, then a registered provider in 1998 and a registered award centre in 2000.
How long have you been at your organisation? I started SCTC in 1994 therefore we have 10 years' training experience in delivering management courses in purchasing and logistics. We currently work in six industrial sectors and do courses from the entrant to the senior management level.
What is your professional experience? I have been in purchasing and logistics most of my working life. My experience includes several sectors and mostly management roles. I also lectured part time for 20 years in both these subjects on postgraduate courses, so I have a broad academic base matched with years of practical application. I have qualifications in training and have recently qualified as an external verifier.
Who are the key logistics and transport personnel in your organisation and their professional experience? We have our own staff: Andrew Scott, Technical Support, 11 years of technical and Web support; Margaret Roberts, Assessor, professional assessor and trainer; Mike Rogers, Assessor, procurement; Andy Scott, Assessor, Supplies, manufacturing; Jon Chase MILT, Assessor, 22 years' logistics management experience; Stephen Wolstenholme MILT, Assessor, 20 years' logistics management experience; Tom Bisset, Internal Verifier, lecturer in retail for 15 years; Jessie Scott, Course Administration, 10 years' course administration in university; Archie Scott FCILT, Principle Trainer and Director, 25 years in purchasing and logistics management.
How important do you feel professional qualifications are in the logistics and transport sector? I have always thought qualifications have a defining role in career building. A qualification shows an employer that the candidate can take initiative, adopt new ideas and is adaptable. Most employers are looking for these traits and there are few candidates who can display them. Qualifications say more about a potential candidate than their certificate.
What other relevant training courses do you offer? We also offer vocational qualifications in Purchasing Levels 3 and 4. We are one of a few centres registered by CIPS. We also offer the CIPS Graduate Diploma (Level 4). Other than qualifications, we have a programme of one-day courses in supply chain subjects – for example, Inventory, Supply Chain Management, Introduction to Logistics. All of the 13 one-day courses we offer are available for in-company training, as well as customised training for clients' needs.
What future developments are planned within your organisation in relation to logistics and transport qualifications? We have been working towards accreditation for the Scottish Quality Management System and Quality Measuring Audit. This was successfully awarded in February. We are recognised for our high level of customer service and as a quality training provider. This should give us a measurable quality badge in training provision for all the courses and qualifications we offer and reassure clients of a quality service.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering entering the logistics and transport profession? Don't delay – procrastination is the thief of opportunities.
