WINNER: DHL/Homebase
DHL and Homebase recognised that with fuel and other costs rising and the economy struggling it was important for the business to look at every possible way of controlling and reducing costs. The project set very challenging targets for vehicle fill rates in order to reduce costs and the impact on the environment. A clear plan of action was developed to deliver cost, operational and environmental benefits and achieved a 25% increase in vehicle utilisation. The approach has wider applicability within the industry and DHL and Homebase are to be congratulated for their comprehensive approach and joint working.
FINALIST: Arriva Trains Wales
Arriva Trains Wales recognised that their performance on the Cambrian line between Aberystwyth and Birmingham was considerably lower than that achieved on other services operated by the company. The company set about to clearly understand the root causes of the reliability problems before developing an action plan covering not only operational issues but other contributory factors such as engineering and maintenance processes. The benefits have been highlighted by a dramatic improvement in reliability and significant reduction in customer complaints. Arriva Trains Wales have clearly demonstrated the benefits of their action plan and how service reliability and customer experience has improved.
FINALIST: Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT)
This innovative project involving Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, Traveline Scotland and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde promoted public transport and encouraged modal shift by advising those with NHS appointments on the availability of public transport. The project provided patients with personalised journey plans and by integration and automation with existing NHS appointment system minimised resources required to operate the scheme. The project has brought clear benefits to individuals, the NHS and the community generally. This system is widely applicable to many similar operations and the partners have encouraged discussions with other Health Boards and Regional Transport Partnerships to help spread good practice.
