Passenger Transport Security Forum

Chairman: Peter Whent FCILT

Your Institute is introducing some changes, making us more open and relevant to you, whichever sector of logistics or transport you work in.

We are replacing the four Faculties with eight Professional Sectors. These Professional Sectors will provide specialist activity for a particular area of interest whilst continuing to offer opportunity and involvement across the profession.

What you need to do...

We are now asking all members to update their details and tell us which Professional Sectors and Forums they want to belong to as soon as possible. You can do this in a number of ways - online through ‘My Membership', complete the Member Selection form that you will shortly receive in Focus, or complete the form included on the Current Awareness Bulletin over the next few weeks.

Please note, you can now belong to as many Professional Sectors and Forums as you wish.

Should you wish to make your selections online, please remember that you will need to create your password to login if you have not already done so. A short guide to making your selection online is available here.

Passenger Transport Security Forum

In July 2006  CILT(UK) endorsed a major national conference on transport security and counter-terrorism, also assisting with its organisation. The event proved to be the catalyst for the establishment of this new Forum.

The terrorist atrocities of recent years have raised the profile of transport security, especially around passenger transport environments. It is not a field of study in which CILT(UK) has had any real involvement, yet the Institute is well qualified to take on this important subject.

Transport security appears very straightforward at a superficial level, but when it is studied in earnest it becomes clear that it is a complex subject, with a very significant number of components. This situation is exacerbated even more by the continuing terrorist threat, which we are told will endure for at least the next decade. The recent and controversial imposition of stricter security measures that caused chaotic scenes at major UK airports is a prime example of where more rigorous procedures may create many more problems than they solve.

Initially, it is anticipated that the new Forum will look at best practice, hold specialist seminars and produce a series of briefing papers. The first of these was published in November 2007.

Ultimately, it is intended that CILT(UK) will become a natural repository for information in the field of security, providing informed comment and briefing Government, transport organisations and the media as appropriate.

The Forum may be able to assist with providing speakers for Regional or Group meetings.
