Sustainable development is one of the challenges of our time. Debate about the best way in which to achieve "green" goals and match the wider corporate social responsibility agenda is gaining momentum among the global business community and is also an issue of pressing concern among governments and legislators.
Defined simply, sustainable development means economic activity that limits, ameliorates or prevents damage to the existing natural environment. It includes improvements in resources and processes, reductions in waste and inefficiency, and also due consideration of the needs and rights of the communities within which organisations operate.
In order to drive this agenda, new economic models and entrepreneurial approaches are gaining currency and have the potential to dramatically reshape and disrupt the business landscape of the 21st century.

Traditionally, collaboration within the supply chain has concentrated on transport sharing, facilitated predominantly by 3PLs. But does collaboration stop here?
As supply chains become more efficient and continue to face increasing cost and service pressures, finding innovative ways to collaborate will generate opportunities for manufacturers and retailers.
Speaker: Chris Hall, National Transport Manager, Asda Stores Ltd
With the attainment of the CILT(UK) 2011 award in Supply Chain Innovation, Chris is well suited to discuss innovative and creative collaboration methods between retailers and carriers. The changes implemented by Chris and the teams at Asda have enabled them to contribute significantly to their "We operate for Less" programme.
Speaker: Paul Wallace, Commercial Director, Hutchison Ports (UK)
With ports becoming increasingly focused as logistical hubs, Paul is overseeing advances at Hutchison Ports (UK) in implementing innovative methods to positively impact the wider supply chain. The concept of centralising logistics hubs at the port (Port Centric) has long been in place at the Port of Felixstowe and is becoming more focal within the retail supply chain.

Bisham Annual Debate
Forget the Far East, bring manufacturing home
When: 23 May 2012, 18:30 - 21:30
Where: Phyllis Court Club, Marlow Road, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, RG9 2HT
This house believes
"Forget the Far East, bring manufacturing home"
Join Bisham in Henley on the evening of 23rd May for a lively debate on the pros and cons of bringing back manufacturing jobs that had been lost to Asia. Many UK companies are now discovering that global increases in commodity and labour prices mean that Asia's low-cost manufacturing advantage has been eroded. Many large British companies such as GlaxoSmithKline are bringing production back to the UK and Jaguar Land Rover recently announced a £355million investment in an engine plant in Wolverhampton, which will create 750 jobs.
Amongst small businesses, as well, there is renewed enthusiasm for local sourcing. Bringing manufacturing back home has paid off for many companies. It helps to generate jobs and often improves the quality of the product. There is currently a project near Manchester run by Mary Portas making quality knickers using local materials and unemployed people and charging a reasonable price not a rock bottom price.
Manufacturers around the world have had to cope with a 30 per cent year-on-year increase in a basket of commodity prices in the first five months of this year, according to the IMF. At the same time, oil prices have been volatile but the long-term outlook for energy prices, globally, is only higher. Supply chains from emerging markets have also turned out to be riskier. Orders can take months to fulfil and there is a widespread disregard for intellectual property.
Yet bringing manufacturing ‘back home' may not be such a good thing, according to Professor Richard Dashwood at Warwick University's Manufacturing Group. ‘Most of the work that has gone offshore has been at the high value, low volume end of the market. Do we want to send out the message that the UK is now just as cheap as Asian economies for manufacturing?' he asks, (quote from an article by Angela Jameson on thisismoney.co.uk website).
Realistically, many low-cost manufacturing jobs will never return to these shores, but global trends in commodity, energy and labour prices mean there is a window to bring skilled manufacturing jobs back to Britain. What do you think?
