FAQ's
Who is the Level 3 logistics and supply chain certificate for?
It's for people working in logistics, supply chain or operations, or starting out in the profession, who want a recognised qualification. It turns what you do at work into a nationally recognised qualification and gives you a solid grounding in how supply chains work.
Does the course cover inventory management?
Yes. Inventory is a big part of Unit 2, which everyone takes. It covers safety stock calculations, economic order quantity (EOQ), reorder point and periodic review models, vendor managed inventory (VMI) and the bullwhip effect. You'll also look at stock types, stock control and valuation methods such as FIFO, LIFO and weighted average cost.
How does the course deal with supply chain risk?
Unit 2 covers supply chain resilience, risk identification, and risk assessment using a consequence and likelihood matrix. It also covers the four ways to deal with a risk: accept, avoid, reduce or transfer it.
Does it cover different types of supply chain?
Yes. Unit 1 looks at lean, agile and responsive supply chains. It also looks at how supply chains work in different sectors: food, pharmaceuticals, construction, retail, parcel and pallet networks, dangerous goods, bonded goods and humanitarian supply chains.
Does it cover transport modes and international freight?
Yes, in Unit 4. You'll look at maritime, air, rail and road freight, containerisation and intermodal systems. It also covers customs, Incoterms, freight forwarders, freeports and trade agreements.
Will I learn about warehousing and distribution?
Yes, if you choose Unit 4 (Logistics and Supply Chain Operations). It covers warehouse design, goods receipt, putaway, picking, packing, cross-docking and dispatch. It also covers manual handling equipment, standard operating procedures, 5S and distribution requirements planning (DRP).
What will I study?
You complete three units. There are two core units: Business Operations Along the Supply Chain, and Cross-functional Interconnectivity. You then choose one optional unit: Production Operations Management or Logistics and Supply Chain Operations. Pick the one that fits your role.
What is the difference between logistics and supply chain management?
Logistics covers moving and storing goods: transport, warehousing, inventory and distribution. Supply chain management is wider. It joins up logistics with planning, sourcing, production, data and risk, from supplier to customer. This qualification covers both, so you see how they fit together.
Is the Level 3 Certificate regulated?
Yes. It's regulated by Ofqual (610/2537/9) in England and Qualifications Wales (C00/4783/7). It sits at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. It's also mapped to the CILT (UK) Competency Framework, which sets out the skills and knowledge the profession expects.
Which optional unit should I choose?
Choose Production Operations Management if you work in manufacturing or production planning. It covers forecasting, MRP, scheduling and lean.
Choose Logistics and Supply Chain Operations if you work in warehousing, distribution or freight. It covers 3PL management, warehouse processes, freight modes, customs and Incoterms.
Can I study online, and how long does it take?
Yes. You can study this logistics qualification online, as self-study or hybrid with live digital classrooms. It takes 12 to 14 months.
Do I need experience or qualifications to start?
There are no formal entry requirements. We recommend English and Maths at GCSE level (Level 2). If English isn't your first language, you'll need an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent. All materials and assessments are in English.
What can I do after Level 3?
You can move on to the Level 5 Professional Certificate in Supply Chain and Operations Management, then the Level 6 Professional Diploma in Supply Chain Networks. Level 6 meets the educational requirement for Chartered Member grade (CMILT).
Does it lead to professional membership?
Yes. Completing Level 3 meets the educational requirement for Member grade (MILT). Once you also have three years' experience in logistics and transport, you can apply for Member grade and use MILT after your name.
Can I train my team on Level 3?
Yes. We can phase the qualification so everyone starts with an introductory module and only those who need more continue. Contact the Partnerships team to discuss bespoke logistics training, or see the Learning Centre for all our courses.
Is the Level 3 Certificate an apprenticeship?
No. It's a standalone qualification you study around your current job, so you don't need to change roles or sign up to an apprenticeship programme. Employers can still fund it, and many do.
