The government has confirmed funding for passenger transport manufacturer Alstom to deliver 10 new trains for the Elizabeth Line.

This £370 million contract comes after increased demand, with 700,000 passengers using the Elizabeth Line every weekday, according to Transport for London (TfL).

Journeys are expected to rise to 226 million during the 2024/25 financial year, an 8% increase from the end of the current financial year.

"The Elizabeth line has been a game-changer for our city, transforming travel across London and the South East and delivering a £42 billion boost to the UK economy," said Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London.

The new trains will be manufactured at Alstom's Derby Litchurch Lane Works facility before being added as 10 nine-car Aventra locomotives to the popular line, bringing the total Elizabeth Line fleet to 80 trains.

Alstom said they will also provide associated maintenance until 2046.

Nick Crossfield, Managing Director UK and Ireland at Alstom said: "We are delighted to now have a confirmed workload for Derby Litchurch Lane and our supply chain across the UK."
