Birmingham New Street improvements reach halfway mark

29 April 2013/Categories: Industry News

The first phase of improvements to Birmingham New Street station is complete.

As of Sunday April 28th, passengers can use a new concourse and three additional entrances, while there is also a new rep entrance for drivers.

This has allowed the old station and all of its existing entrances to close for redevelopment.

The work is the first major changes at New Street in over 40 years and represents a major milestone in the improvement of the station, which started in 2010.

Chris Montgomery, Network Rail’s project director, said: "The first half of the new concourse will be bigger, brighter and better than the old station, with new escalators and lifts also providing better access."

A major information campaign has taken place to inform over one million people about the work that is being undertaken.

Network Rail has recommended that passengers allow some extra time for their journey the first time they use the new concourse.
