A new bus depot could be built on the outskirts of Bristol to cater for an increase in the number of passengers.

First Bus said its depots at Lawrence Hill and Hengrove were 'full'. It added its one at Muller Road was 'falling down' and would not be repaired.

The firm said it was looking at options which included building a new depot near Yate and Cribbs Causeway.

South Gloucestershire Council said discussions had taken place but no specific site had yet been suggested.
James Freeman, managing director of First West of England, said: 'Our operation in the West of England is constantly expanding and our current depots will soon be full.

'To ensure we are secured for any future growth we are looking at lots of different options.'

'Structural problems'

A spokesman added the former depot at Muller Road had 'significant structural problems', was 'quite small' and in an area that regularly suffers from heavy congestion which 'renders it impractical'.

South Gloucestershire Council said it held regular meetings with First Bus to discuss services and was 'aware of their aspiration to build a new bus depot in South Gloucestershire'.

'However no detailed proposals, including park and ride options, or specific sites have yet been put forward,' a spokesman said.

'In discussing any proposals the council will aim to ensure the best and most efficient use of any new facility, as well as ensuring that the potential impacts upon local communities are fully assessed.

'Any such proposal would of course be subject to extensive consultation as part of the planning process.'
