East Midlands Airport reports soaring passenger and freight numbers

22 July 2015/Categories: CILT, Aviation, Logistics & Supply Chain

East Midlands Airport has seen a rise in passenger numbers, sales and profits, according to the full-year results of its parent company.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which owns the Castle Donington airport, said that East Midlands was a "high performing local airport".

In the 12 months to March 31, 4.6 million passengers used the airport, a 7% increase from the 4.3 million the previous year.

Its financial performance also improved with revenues rising by 9.4% to £59.4 million. Pre-tax profits also climbed by almost 20% to £19.6 million.

The positive set of financial results follows the completion of £12 million of terminal improvements.

The extension to the terminal will house a new security area and food outlets.

At the same time, the airport is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

In its full-year results, released this morning, MAG said: "East Midlands Airport continued to perform well this year, demonstrating the value that a high performing local airport can bring to a region and the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.

"The airport has also reached a significant milestone as it celebrated its 50th birthday in April.

"More than 95 million passengers have flown through the airport during this time, with around half of these in the last 10 years alone."

East Midlands is home to 15 airlines who fly to more than 90 destinations.

But as well as being a busy passenger airport, East Midlands is also the largest pure freight airport in the world.

Its freight operation enjoyed a record year with more than 312,000 tonnes of cargo flown.

It was also further boosted by announcement by DHL to expand its operations at East Midlands, representing a £90 million investment.

MAG said: "DHL has announced its intention to significantly expand their express freight facilities at the airport, further cementing the major national role that East Midlands plays in this critical market for the UK."

As well as East Midlands Airport, MAG also operates Manchester, Stansted and Bournemouth airports.

Overall, the group recorded a rise in passenger numbers, sales and profits.

Passenger numbers grew by 10.7% to 48.5 million, revenue increased by 10% to £738.4 million and profits grew by 17.2% to £238.6 million.

MAG's chief executive Charlie Cornish said: "MAG has delivered a fifth consecutive year of strong growth.

"Investment and development has enabled us to exceed expectations across many of our key measures, including the delivery of industry leading passenger numbers and trading performance.

"Our airports have a vital role to play in the next 10 to 15 years as London expands eastwards, the Northern Powerhouse becomes a reality and runway capacity in the South East becomes even scarcer.

"Following the Airports Commission's submission of its final report, it is imperative that the focus of government and other stakeholders is on the practical steps needed to maximise the potential of existing airport capacity in the period before a new runway is completed."
