First introduces cheaper travel for Young People
First bus has announced the introduction of a brand new £10 week ticket for young people aged 16 – 18 across Greater Manchester from 5 January 2014.

The introduction of the new “FirstWeek 16-18” ticket is based upon market research conducted by First to identify ways to attract more young people onto bus services. As a result the new ticket is being made available to everyone in the 16 – 18 year old age group, not just those in education.

First already offer excellent value day and week tickets for under 16’s and discounted month and term tickets for students but is now extending great value travel to the 16 – 18 age group. Although this age group can take advantage of half-fare travel between school and college with the Scholar’s Concessionary Permit, issued by TfGM, or the multi-operator System One Young Persons ticket, this FirstWeek 16-18 ticket offer is a brand new, low price initiative by First.

The innovative new ticket will be available via the First mobile ticket app that was launched by First in May this year. First’s m-Ticket makes it easier for customers to buy tickets and removes the worry of not having the correct change as well as speeding up boarding times. The App is available for free from the “App Store” and Google Play. Customers simply download the app, register, select the ticket they want and navigate the secure payment system.

To complete the purchase of the “FirstWeek 16-18” ticket customers simply upload their picture and the ticket will be displayed on the screen for the driver to check and record. There is no other identification required.

An extensive marketing campaign will be launched in the New Year across Greater Manchester and will include communication with colleges across the area.

The move by First follows the introduction of price reductions on many local routes as well as the network wide price reductions last year of the Day (still only £4) and Week tickets - with the weekly at £13.50 still £4.50 cheaper than in March 2013.

Ian Humphreys, Head of Commercial for First in Greater Manchester added, “We’re delighted to extend our range of great value tickets with this innovative new ticket for young people available to all 16-18 year olds, not just those in education. First is growing customers across Greater Manchester and we want to help support young people and encourage even greater use of public transport.”
