West Drayton improvements revealed

Crossrail has laid out plans to revamp West Drayton station, ahead of the service beginning operations, in a submission to Hillingdon council.

While the design aims to keep the present Victorian building as a focal point, a new steel and glass extension will create an additional entrance and covered walkway. A footbridge and three new lifts will ensure step-free access to all platforms.

There will also be additional lighting, customer information points, CCTV and extra signs.

Technical improvements are also part of the proposal, as platform extensions will be needed to fully accommodate the Crossrail trains, which will be 200 m long.
The design was created by architects Bennetts Associates. Its chief director Julian Lipscombe said: “One of the delights of our commission for Crossrail is the sheer diversity of station contexts and remits that we are addressing. Our design for West Drayton extends a handsome Victorian station building with a crisp contemporary addition.”
