What is CILT(UK) Mentoring

A mentoring service that has been developed to support members in their CPD activities. This scheme is open to all members of the Institute regardless of membership grade, age or work status.

All Institute mentors have proven commitment to the profession and support the aims of CILT(UK) to 'promote professional excellence. So whether you would like a mentor to help you with your CPD or think you have the knowledge and skills to be a mentor yourself, the Institute can help you make the most of this exciting relationship. You can be at any stage of your career or qualification to benefit from having the support of a mentor.

What is my role in a mentoring relationship?

As a protégé, most importantly, you must want to develop. You must also have a willingness to participate, to learn, to be flexible and to take ownership of your learning.

You will also need to be prepared to set appropriate outcomes and goals, and undertake personally the solutions and actions that are needed to achieve the outcomes.

As a mentor you must be able to recognise the protégé’s abilities and to help them achieve their goals, explore their career potential and seize opportunities.


What are the benefits of mentoring?

For the mentee, the benefits are:

  • A source of knowledge from an experienced and trusted adviser and guide 
  • Help with professional issues 
  • Guidance to improve performance or aid career development 
  • Academic support for study or research 
  • Help with reflection on learning and development activities undertaken

As a mentor you will:

  • Gain valuable experience of other affinity groups within industry 
  • Develop your interpersonal skills 
  • Nurture your network 
  • Have the satisfaction of enabling someone to develop 
  • Become a skilled coach Learn the art of reflective dialogue
  • Experience reflective learning at first hand
