UK named worst in Europe for traffic pollution
Published: 3 March 2009
Britain has been named the worst country in Europe for road pollution in a study of local authorities.
According to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), UK levels of dangerous traffic fumes, caused by congestion and high population concentrations, are placing people's health at risk.
The government report stated that some stretches of road break EU air pollution laws in 95 per cent of British cities and regions, compared with just 21 per cent in France.
Road pollution has been linked to a number of conditions - including asthma and premature death - and can pose a serious health risk.
The study warned that the UK could face steep fines unless measures are taken by hundreds of local authorities to ensure that safe levels of fumes are achieved across the country.
Recent research by the Energy Saving Trust found that almost half of all company car drivers could be classed as 'environmentally aware', while just 13 per cent are not concerned about green issues.
