The Brompton Electric is designed to change cities; it has smart features, a sleek design and is simple to use. The bike has 4 modes, ranging from no assistance (the bike rides smoothly without the battery) through to a high level of assistance, perfect if you want to arrive fresh to a meeting or are climbing a large hill.
The key features and full specification details are in the table below, which lays out all the technical information about the bike.
Key Features
• Custom-developed 250W front hub motor giving an extremely high performance-to-weight output.
• Bike still folds to the same size as a non-electric Brompton.
• To aid portability, the battery can be carried separately, integrating neatly into a shoulder bag.
• Battery features intuitive user interface and USB charging port for mobile devices
• All Brompton Electric bikes come with the standard battery bag (1.5L), however, there is an additional option to buy a commuter bag (20L), which can store your larger items, e.g. a laptop
• Smooth ride thanks to the smart, integrated torque and cadence sensor
The Brompton was unveiled at the Brompton World Championships final, the annual eight-lap race around The Mall and St James’s Park.
Conceived over 10 years, the new Brompton E has been developed in partnership with Williams F1 Racing in the last four. The secret is in the battery concealed in a utility bag clipped to the front frame. The battery feeds from a dynamo in the front wheel hub and can also power a laptop or tablet in the bag, which doubles as an attaché case. Weighing 13 kilos, the bike is astonishingly light — lighter in fact than the standard two-speed Brompton roadster that has been my transport of choice in London for the past 10 years.
Full production begins in the new year, with a target build of 100 a week. The full retail price is expected to be around the £2,500 mark. They will also be available for hire in 20 cities.
