Scottish railway undergoes enhancement for Glasgow's Games

24 January 2014/Categories: Industry News

The railway in Scotland is to undergo a period of enhancement to get it ready for the Commonwealth Games.

Network Rail has announced a programme of works to take place, in anticipation of the competition starting in six month's time. This includes line maintenance, station refurbishment and to cut back on vegetation.

Glasgow Central will receive a £2 million makeover between now and June to upgrade its facilities and appearance. Meanwhile, the Glasgow-Cumbernauld line will be electrified, with electric trains running by March. A new station will also be opened by the end of June.

Network Rail acting route managing director for Scotland David Dickson said: "The work we are undertaking and robust plans we have in place for during the Games will help us make sure we can keep Scotland moving smoothly this summer."

The opening ceremony for the Games will be at the Celtic Park stadium on July 23rd.
