Depot relocation will cost HS2 £20 million

06 December 2013/Categories: Industry News

A mail depot will be relocated to avoid HS2's proposed route, which will contribute £20 million in funding.

UK Mail in Birmingham will start the construction of its new facility in 2014, moving in spring 2015, after reaching an agreement with the Department for Transport.

HS2's commercial director Beth West said: "This is a significant step forward and provides clear evidence that HS2 Ltd can work successfully with businesses to secure long term benefits for both."

The project is able to spend money on such costs since the High Speed Rail (Preparation) Bill was passed near the start of November. This granted permission to purchase property and compensate those involved, with UK Mail being one of the more expensive examples of this.

This was followed by the Hybrid Bill's approval later in the month, which enables the construction of the first phase, connecting London and Birmingham, although it also grants interested individuals and groups the right to petition parliament either for or against the development.
